SPOKEN CAFE (previously known as Beans and Bagels) has been open for over 25 years in the Ravenswood neighborhood and is one of the oldest coffee shops in Chicago.
Saturday, March 21st, we had to close our doors due to Coronavirus (Covid-19) in an effort to protect our customers and our staff. As you know, we know how to bring a crowd! We take our roles as community members seriously and have served many of you over many years, and some others for decades.
In the long term, we are fighting for the passing of legislation for small business stimulus packages, to help ensure that like the large corporations, we too can re-open when coronavirus' risk to the public subsidies. To attend to immediate concerns, our staff is in need of supports to cover their rents, bills, and basic necessities.
We are asking you to contribute what you can. It was a difficult decision to close in light of the coronavirus, but we could not in good faith ask our staff to be on the front lines of this pandemic.
As a regular, you likely know our staff rather well. Many have been with us for years, and have seen your children grow taller, celebrated with you on life milestones, cried with you, laughed with you, and perhaps witnessed your first gray hairs. We miss seeing you on your way to work, on your lunch hour, and meeting your friends and family when you bring them to your favorite breakfast spot. Some of your namesakes are even on our menu! We feel you are a part of us, and we know the feeling is mutual.
Please give what you can, share with your friends, and please please join us in calling your representatives and senators to help small businesses around the country. You can be connected to the national switchboard at (202) [phone redacted]. Deman that independent businesses are part of the Federal Stimulus Plan.
If you give $50 or more:
You will receive an original piece of artwork created by either:
- Starshaped Press
- Bird Machine
- Dan Grzeca of Ground Up Press
Each original print was created by these incredible artists (who also happen to be regulars) to celebrate Spoken cafe.
*while supplies last
We thank you for your support and hope to see you at the cafe soon.
