Sponsor the education of a Rural Midwife

In Ethiopia 30% of women die of pregnancy related causes. The Maternal mortality rates is one of the highest in Africa. One of the reasons for this unnecessary death is the critical shortage of skilled midwives in the country . In order to contribute to the reduction of the maternal mortality, I established LeDeG MIDWIFERY COLLEGE in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
My name is Dr. Teguest Guerma Gebreamlak, CEO and founder of the LeDeG Midwifery college. LeDeG Midwifery College is a dream come true. In the forty -two years that I spent outside of my country, I have always dreamt to return to Ethiopia and support women in rural areas. My experience working in the UN and other International organizations has given me the opportunity to realize this dream. Establishing this college has not been easy as I had to construct a building, buy the equipment, recruit the staff, etc. I used my retirement funds and all of my savings in order to accomplish this.
The "sponsor a rural midwife" campaign aims to raise money to sponsor students from rural Ethiopia to come to Addis Ababa and train as midwives and go back to serve their respective communities. These sponsored students will train at LeDeG Midwifery college, a center of excellence which will graduate competent ethical and compassionate midwives with Bachelor of Science Degrees. It is fully accredited by the government of Ethiopia. 100% of the money raised from this campaign will be used to cover school fees, room and board, food, uniform, school equipment, teaching aid, and a monthly stipend. It costs 3000USD per year, to fully sponsor the training of a midwife.
LeDeG Midwifery College is a social enterprise which will help rural girls to become midwives and return to their communities to save lives. In this academic year, 35 girls have registered and have started their studies. Among them, 9 are fully sponsored students. These students come from the most vulnerable regions of Ethiopia.
