Hi, my name is Lisa and Carl is my grandson. He recently had a diagnosis which is heartbreaking and will change his life forever.
So it would look like this:
Hello!
My grandson Carl age 17 has recently had a heartbreaking diagnosis which has changed his life forever.
His background story is that since he was 7 he has been a keen swimmer and even more a very keen rugby player, playing for east hull. For the last few years Carl has said he wanted to be a joiner on leaving school. The whole family and friends tried but failed to get him on an apprenticeship course. So in October 2024 he went to Edinburgh on his own to see if he could pass the fitness test to join the Army as an apprentice joiner. He came home after the weekend away saying he needed to have his eyes tested. Carl's mum took him to the opticians where they immediately saw an issue and referred him to the hospital.
To cut along story short. Carl is going blind. He's had 5 scans in the past 4 months. His vision in both eyes are very damaged. He only has 40%-50% vision in his left eye. Approximately 20% vision now in his right eye ( he lost 10% in the past month) It's a race against time. Carl is only 17 years old.
He has had to give up rugby. Which is a big loss to him but the biggest thing for Carl at the moment is driving. Since he was 14 he has worked in his local pub as a pot washer saving his money for driving lessons even working on Christmas day. Unfortunately he was told a month after turning 17 he cannot drive due to his sight being so bad.
We have been advised to get him sunglasses to wear at all times. Yellow tinted glasses to wear when watching TV or looking at his phone, but the main one is an iPad.
I am writing this because on Saturday 17th May 2025 I intend to walk across the Humber Bridge and back for 8hrs. This is to hopefully raise enough money to get Carl an iPad to use instead of his phone as he cannot see his phone properly, as the Consultant suggested this would be best.
We are all trying to keep Carl positive but we have no idea what the future will bring. He lives a 50 minute walk to his nearest bus stop down a country road. Him driving was a big thing in his life. So getting an iPad, it's easier for him to communicate with his friends. It's my way of helping, also support from family and friends to achieve this goal, Carl will also be walking with me. If we raise further money this will go towards the sunglasses and any future purchases. I would like to thankyou for your support and would ask you to please share.
