On the evening of September 9th, Maddie was bucked from her horse, drug, and then stepped on by the horse. She sustained a traumatic brain injury with a fractured skull and bleeding in the brain. Thankfully she was wearing a helmet or her injuries would have been worse. She was initially taken by ambulance to Providence in Everett, then later taken to Harborview in Seattle which is the trauma hospital for the Pacific Northwest. The surgeons were able to pull bone fragments forward and lessen the concave depression in her right temporal area. Her team of doctors were pleased that the bleeding maintained between CT scans, and was less than they originally thought. Maddie maintained her personality and asked appropriate questions of her parents throughout while in and out of consciousness. Unfortunately the doctors were unable to repair the nerve that controls raising and lowering her eyebrow on the right side. This might require additional surgery down the road. She has about a 4 inch gash extending from above her right eye into her hairline. The plastic surgeons were able to repair this. She was expected to be discharged home today.
