April 6, 2023 - UPDATE ON ROAD REPAIRS

Dear friends and neighbors:

The contractor/excavator (Ted Rebich) and I worked on the road for two full days this week- Monday April 3rd and Wednesday April 5th. The following was completed:

Excavator and Operator- Two full days of excavation.

A full, complete, and total re-grading of the main road, generally from the Mailboxes to the top of the Lake Access Road (next to the Bott cabin.) Total demolition and foundation re-build of every pothole was performed along the aforementioned path.

New stone and trucking- Twelve (12) total triaxles of new stone trucked in and placed/spread.

Each triaxle held an average of 22.5 tons of stone, for a grand total of approximately 270 tons (540,000 pounds) of new stone.

Spreading by truck was performed in all areas where overhead wires were not of concern.

Spreading by machine excavator was required in several areas where overhead wires prevented spreading by truck.

Leveling and grading by hand rake was performed as much as possible to smooth-out certain areas.

Anticipated final cost- The final invoice has not yet been received but will be posted once available. The following are the anticipated expenses:

Two days of excavator and operator at $1,000 per day = $2,000
Twelve loads at an estimated/average cost of $675 per load = $8,100
Total anticipated final cost = $10,100.00

Thank you very much to all owners, guests, relatives and friends who have contributed to this point. If you are compelled to make an additional contribution now that you have seen the results, it would be welcomed.

We are kindly asking all of those who have not yet contributed to please do so, now that you have seen the results. The GoFundMe link is still active, or you may speak to Bryan Halulko at 165 Johnston Ln. to make arrangements to help us cover the shortfall.

Thank you.

UPDATE 11/14/2022: Thank you to all of our generous donors! We AGAIN quickly reached and exceeded our improved goal of $1,000! We have been contacted by a few others who also wish to donate, so we are again improving the goal to $1,750.00. Plans are already underway for equipment rental in Spring (March/April, depending upon future weather) to bust out the potholes and re-grade the poor sections of the road. The more we can get at or over $1,750 provides for the added ability to haul-in new stone for the areas of the roads that will receive construction repairs.

To keep everyone informed on the anticipated expenses for the road repairs:
  • Machine/Grader Rental: $300 per day plus tax.
  • Machine Delivery, Drop Off, and Pickup by Rental Agency: $250, round trip, from Seneca PA.
  • Stone: Average cost for local hauling (as of today) is $800.00 plus tax per Tri-Axle load, including truck, driver, and fuel surcharge.

Let's keep this going! Per feedback received from the generous donors thus far, our base goal should be to cover the cost of the necessary equipment/machinery and at least one Tri-Axle load of new stone to cover the areas of heavy repair.

Thank you!

UPDATE 11/11/2022: Thank you to all of our generous donors so far! We quickly reached (and exceeded) our base reimbursement collection of $350.00.... So we are improving the Go Fund Me to $1,000.00 to focus on the pothole repairs that are needed. We appreciate all of the community support that is being shown to keep Squaw Valley Woodlands beautiful!
*******************************************
On or about November 1, 2022, a sinkhole opened and appeared directly inside of Lake Johnston, on the Johnston Lane side of Squaw Valley Woodlands (south/southwestern area of the lake.) The sinkhole was quickly swallowing much of the lake water, and it is reasonable to estimate that millions of gallons of lake water were lost into the sinkhole. Without quick action, the sinkhole would have grown and potentially left all of us landowners without our precious lake and its wonderful resources, leading to the total loss of our fishing, swimming, boating, and wildlife activities enjoyment. As you can see in the photo, the lake quickly shrunk to 50% of its size.

We offer our sincerest thanks to several community members who were involved in both the temporary triage to stop the water loss, as well as the permanent repairs to cure the sinkhole. Calls were made and repair plans were discussed/approved with the appropriate governmental agency(ies), and permission from the Landowner/Declarant was obtained to complete the emergency repairs.

We are grateful and give thanks to all of the community members who were involved in planning, organizing, providing labor, or just simply offering support and ideas. This fundraiser is intended to reimburse the two key neighboring families, both of whom provided labor, gave their time, and sourced materials/equipment to cure the sinkhole in advance of the significant rainfall that is expected to begin this weekend (November 11-12, 2022.)

  • In addition to pickup and fuel/transportation expenses, as well as electricity and water supply, Todd Rich and Elizabeth Jones purchased and covered the hard costs for 1.5 tons of clay, 1 ton of sand, and the concrete mixer/machine rental costs- which, with such short notice, was only available from a rental agency closer to Pittsburgh and had to be retrieved and transported by truck to/from Squaw Valley Woodlands and then returned during a tight 24 hour rental period.
  • In addition to pickup and fuel/transportation costs, Steve and Donna Schweiger purchased and covered hard costs for approximately 1 ton of high strength concrete, delivered and offloaded by hand at the jobsite.

Again we thank all of the community members who were involved in the emergency repairs to save our lake. Any excess donations received over and above the base reimbursement will be donated to the Squaw Valley road repair fund.
