Everything can change in an instant

Recently my 25-year-old daughter Lily, and I were in a horrific -and life-changing-motorcycle accident. While traveling 60-plus miles per hour on a wooded road in rural New York a deer ran out at the very last second and we hit it full on with no time to react.

All I remember is the sound of crunching metal and a violent crash as we went down. The aftermath was like being in a movie, and every parent's worst nightmare. I stood up, with obvious breaks to my arm and hands, road rash, and bleeding, only to turn around to see Lily lying motionless in the middle of the road. It was unclear whether her injuries at the time were life-threatening and all I could do was cry out for help.

Thankfully, another motorist came on the scene after what seemed like an eternity, and the rest was a blur as the shock wore off. Lily was airlifted to one hospital and I was taken to another where I had to wait 5 hours to learn about her condition. In total, Lily spent five days in the hospital and suffered four broken ribs, five facial fractures, a broken wrist, and a concussion.

Miraculously, we both escaped life-threatening injuries and for that, we are both so very thankful there are no words to describe the feeling of getting ‘another chance'. We are now 6 weeks into our recovery, with the practical implications unknown at the time now setting in. Dealing with the physical injuries has taken a toll, and Lily has also been affected by the psychological implications of the wreck, leading her to seek treatment with various mental health professionals.

At this point payment of all of her medical and other expenses related to the accident are being denied by my motorcycle policy due to exclusions I was never aware of. I thought I was a pretty informed individual prior to this insurance domino effect and all I can say on that note is READ YOUR VEHICLE INSURANCE POLICIES CAREFULLY as you may be surprised!

Given the out-of-state exclusions of Lily’s limited medical coverage best-case scenario, she will have thousands in deductibles and uncovered expenses. Lily was about to attend Cosmetology school on August 1st, 2022, but is still recovering from injuries and will incur related rescheduling costs. These plus direct out-of-pocket expenses when she cannot work are taking a heavy toll.

I remain hopeful that over time the larger portions of these expenses will be resolved. However, both of us were impacted greatly by the financial implications. So as humbling as it is to do so I am asking for help. Lily was just starting down a new path with hope and excitement and the past 6 weeks have been so hard and will continue to be so.

As her father, I of course don’t want her to suffer such consequences. At the same time, I said the accident was life-changing in the sense that it has given us both new perspectives on how blessed we have been and are, and we move forward through this challenging time with that as the driving influence for a more optimistic vision of the future.

The $7,500 goal of this GODUNDME will go directly towards Lily’s deductibles and unreimbursed out-of-pocket costs incurred as a direct result of our accident.

With sincere thanks and appreciation-

Scott and Lily
