Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple Renovation Project

Donation protected
My father Mr. Viswanthan (soon to be 92 years old) is spearheading the task of renovating  Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple located in Suraikkayur Village (Thiruvarur District).  The goal is to complete the renovation and create a trust that will provide funding for carrying out Nithyapooja.

The centuries-old ancient temple of Sri Varadaraja Perumal is located in the village of Suraikkayur in Kodavasal taluk of Thiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu (PIN 612 203), on the border of Tanjavur District [https://goo.gl/maps/3F3kHhaTk2C2].  The village lies is at a distance of 26 kilometers (16 miles) from the district headquarters of Thiruvarur and 283 kilometers (176 miles) from the State capital of Chennai.  The Sri Varadaraja Perumal temple is close (5 kilometers – 3 miles) to the spiritually world-renowned Lalithambigai temple at Thirumeyachur and the Raghu-Kethu sthalam at Thirupampam (2 kilometers – 1.2 miles).

Sadly, the Sri Varadaraja Perumal has remained without regular pujas and worship for over 50 years now.  Presently the temple, which is built on a ground area of 3200 (80 x 40) square feet, is in ruins and needs extensive repairs.  These include rebuilding the mandapam, compound wall, installation of two iron grill gates (each 30 feet by 20 feet), repairs to and restoration of the principal sanctum sanctorum, as also the sannidihis of Lord Ganesha, Hanuman and Garuda, which form a part of the temple complex.  Restoration will begin after this the idols of utsavars are moved to another temple in the area for safe-keeping. This will be followed by kumbhabishekam (rejuvenation of the temple in keeping with the agama shastra and other vedic dictas).

This long-pending renovation project is a much cherished goal of the villagers Suraikkayur. It is estimated to cost more than Rs. 30,00,000/-.   The vast majority of the villagers are poor farmers,   who struggle hard to make both ends meet.  Driven by their bhakthti and inspired by their passion, they have mustered all their meager resources and raised a sum of a couple lakh Rupees, with which preliminary work has already commenced.

Besides, the villagers have been desperately tapping all external sources of funds known to them.  However, much remains to be done.  This is possible only with active support from well-meaning perumal devotees and other good Samaritans outside. Since work has already begun, though in a modest way, it is imperative that it is carried on to its logical conclusion, sooner than later and should not be abandoned half way through for paucity of funds.  It may not augur well for the poor villagers of Suraikkayur.  Hence the appeal for funds to bail out the villagers and restore the temple of Sri Varadaraja Perumal at Suraikkayur!
