The Sri Udom Orphanage & School
Donation protected
Recently this summer, my friend Naomi and I volunteered with a program called Greenway in Sing Buri, Thailand. We are both high school students from the United States so stepping foot into this small province of Thailand was very different and eye opening. We spent two weeks volunteering at both an orphanage and a primary school but that was enough to make a lasting impact on both of our lives. The orphanage we volunteered at is called the Sri Udom Orphange. Our volunteer coordinator, Peewone, is a Thai native and has spent over 8 years working to improve the conditions at Sri Udom. Our goal for this GoFundMe page is to raise $1,000 for the Sri Udom Orphanage so that they are able to conduct more projects and better the living conditions.
When we arrived to the orphanage, we were told that it is actually one of the best-maintained orphanages in the whole province. In fact, children from all over the country have transferred to Sri Udom. Last year, in 2015, the orphanage carried about 200 kids but in the summer of 2016, the population spiked to over 350 kids. Sri Udom is so overpopulated that at one point in time, there were over 50 children sleeping in one room, some being on the floor.
After spending about a week at the orphanage working on beautification projects (such as digging ditches and painting the walls), we were able to gain insight on how the children lived on a day-to-day basis. With over 350 children at the orphanage, no child is given any privacy; they all shower together and share small, cramped bedrooms. All the children have massive sores all around their mouth and heads full of lice, but there aren’t enough resources to help them. Their condition of living is unbelievably difficult but they still have such positive attitudes and walk around with a big happy smile. Seeing this, we were both very moved and felt the need to do more.
Naomi and I are fortunate enough to be presented with a countless number of opportunities to help others, and we believe it starts with this. The conversion of 1 USD is equivalent to 33 Thai Bahts. If we are able to successfully raise $1,000, we would send the money over to Peewone and GreenWay to generate a total of 33,000 Bahts. This is an incredible amount of money that would be put to great use.
Any money donated would be greatly appreciated. We thank you for taking time to read this and we hope you contribute to our cause.
