Background: Al Barrus is a devoted husband, father, and Army veteran who served our country honorably during the Iraq War in 2003. Known for his kindness and willingness to help others, Al has always brought joy to those around him, including participating in community singing groups for the elderly. However, his life took a tragic turn on October 10, when he experienced a severe mental health crisis.

The Struggle: Despite reaching out for help through the Veterans Crisis Line and 911, Al faced overwhelming barriers and was met with disbelief and indifference. In a desperate plea for assistance, he climbed a tree, only to be met with a chaotic and traumatic response from law enforcement. Instead of receiving the care he needed, Al was treated with disrespect and brutality, leading to further emotional and physical harm.

After a harrowing two weeks in a private mental health hospital, Al was released without the support necessary for recovery. He found himself spiraling deeper into despair, culminating in a series of events that led to his arrest. During his time in jail, Al endured conditions that further shattered his spirit.

The Impact: Al is now receiving proper care at the VA hospital, but the road to recovery is steep. With medical bills piling up, legal fees, and damage costs resulting from his distress, Al's family is facing significant financial burdens. His wife has had to pause her own work to care for their two young children and support Al through this difficult time.
