Stand with Berkley's Heart Battle
Donation protected
Nick and Kelsey are in need of support from their friends, family, and community. I have asked them to share their story about their sweet little love, Berkley, with me to share with others.
Their Story
During our 20-week anatomy scan, we were referred to MGH for additional testing, during which Berkley was prenatally diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). We were uncertain about our future or that of our daughter. Fortunately, we are located in the best area of the country, where medical techniques and advancements are within a short drive of Boston, and we couldn't be happier with her care team at the hospital. Before her birth, numerous photographs were taken of her heart, and they were prepared to perform her initial open-heart surgery at a mere three days old. Unfortunately, a failed extubation, a feeding tube, and a paralyzed vocal cord contributed to her prolonged recovery.
We knew she would have at least 3 surgeries in her lifetime, with the second one coming between 4–6 months old. She underwent an MRI and a cardiac catheterization before surgery, and she developed an occlusive blood clot in her right leg from the catheterization.
On June 14th, she had her second open-heart surgery to make some repairs and hopefully lead her down a better path than the “typical” surgery plan for HLHS.
She is currently being re-intubated because she had trouble clearing carbon dioxide from her lungs. The helplessness we felt watching her recover is something I would never wish on anyone, but we know she is strong. We have a little heart warrior on our hands who is strong and mighty, but our journey is far from over. Thanks to our family, friends, and community for the warm wishes, prayers, and healing vibes we continue to receive. They mean more than you know-thank you!
The Current Situation:
The family is facing numerous challenges. Kelsey and Nick are unable to work and are staying in hospital-provided on-site housing. Berkley is still recovering from her second surgery, and the medical bills are piling up. Additionally, they have ongoing expenses related to their new home.
The Request:
Kelsey and Nick are truly wonderful people who deserve all the support and kindness we can offer. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this on all your social media platforms to help spread the word.
Your support means the world to us. Thank you so much!
