Eddie Canales, ¡Presente!
Donation protected
Thanks to all for your love and support during these past few weeks. This fundraiser will be closing shortly. With appreciation to so many of you, the fundraising goal has been surpassed, covering costs for Eddie's care, his funeral and memorial costs and family expenses. Any remaining funds will go to Eddie's son and daughter, Eddie, Jr. and Erika.
A Memorial and Celebration and Life was held last Saturday in Eddie's hometown of Corpus Christi. Family and friends gathered to share tributes, memories, tears and laughter as stories poured out. These have been echoed online as well, as Eddie's Facebook page (Eddie O Canales) includes streams of photos and heartfelt tributes. Eddie was also remembered among his friends and colleagues internationally, as news of his passing was shared among migrant rights advocates and activists around the world.
Eddie would indeed be surprised to know that his passing caught the attention of the national press, with wonderful, lengthy obituaries:
New York Times: Eddie Canales, 76, Dies; Gave Migrants Water, and Dignity
The Washington Post: Eddie Canales, who campaigned to prevent migrant deaths, dies at 76
We all know that Eddie would want the work that he started with friends and colleagues in South Texas to continue and expand. For those who have been asking about ways to continue his legacy, please stay in touch with the South Texas Human Rights Center (STHRC), the organization he founded and worked for.
