Stand with Kaedon for Justice & Help on his Road to Recovery
Donation protected
Hi! My name is Amanda & I have created this GoFundMe on behalf of my brother’s best friend, Kaedon Phalp in hopes of some assistance. On May 18, 2024 at approximately 9:40 PM my brother Hunter, 19 & his best friend Kaedon, 20 stopped to help a gentleman who was on the side of the road. While trying to be good samaritans our worst nightmare happened. A car came over the hill at a high rate of speed. Both boys caught a glimpse of the car coming right at them. Hunter jumped into the ditch and Kaedon dove the opposite way trying to dive into the cab of his truck. Unfortunately Kaedon was not so lucky. A Toyota RAV4 driven by a man, age 20 from West Des Moines, IA hit Kaedon’s truck as well as Kaedon himself, pinning him between the two vehicles. Hunter was fortunate to walk away with no physical injuries, however Kaedon was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition with significant orthopedic and internal injuries.
According to the probable cause statement from the Platte County Sheriff’s office, the man had just left a wedding in Weston, MO and at the time of the accident his BAC was nearly 7 times the legal limit for someone under the age of 21.
Kaedon spent 6 days in ICU and so far has undergone 8 surgeries with at minimum of another 3 planned. Upon arrival to the hospital it was reported Kaedon suffered a right femur fracture (for a lack of better words the ball at the top of the femur that meet the pelvis broke off), multiple pelvic fractures, dislocated left knee, torn left PCL, MCL, ACL and tendons, his left tibia was broke in 2 places, and damaged nerves down his left leg, as well as other internal injuries.
Right now he is looking at another 6-8 weeks in the hospital with a minimum of 10-12 weeks non-weight bearing due to the injuries/repairs on his pelvis & knees/legs. These are all approximate time frames; right now he is currently fighting an infection in his left leg as well as closely monitoring some blood clots in his arm.
To know Kaedon is to love him. He just turned 20 just days before the accident, he’s still very much a kid. Since the accident his truck has been tucked away with a tarp over it, Hunter has cleaned out Kaedon’s apartment, and my Dad is trying to help assist with the claim on his truck (which has been a big battle).
Kaedon is the kind of person that would give you the shirt off his back, always willing to lend a helping hand. Kaedon did not deserve this. He is a young man with a strong work ethic. He graduated Smithville High School, Class of 2022 and then went on to put himself through welding school and has been working as a welder for the past 2 years. He was working really hard to pay off his student loans and to restore his 2002 Ford F250, which is now a total loss. Not only did the accident cause the truck to have significant body and frame damage, the truck and Kaedon were hit so hard it knocked the rear axle completely out of the back of the truck.
I’ve been following the case very closely and the man that has hit Kaedon is now attempting to plead not guilty on all counts. We really need some assistance in helping Kaedon get the justice he deserves. We are hopeful with him being so young he will recover to the point he can live a healthy and happy life, but obviously there is still so much unknown. He is going to need a lot of support and potentially modifications done to his Mom’s home before he can go home. We are just unsure of what exactly he needs at this time. All funds raised will go directly to Kaedon to help with the hiring of an attorney, medical expenses, and anything that he may need when he is able to go home.
Thank you for taking the time to read Kaedon & Hunter's story. We sincerely appreciate any and all support!
