Stand with Kate for Women's Safety

I first met Kate Rendall two years ago when she told the story of being raped by her oboe teacher, who was at the time, a member of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra ("NZSO"). Kate started by sharing anonymously through my Facebook page, but a year later, revealed her identity publicly as well as her desire to get the NZSO to adopt better policies in support of the safety of women. All along, Kate has simply wanted the NZSO to investigate her complaint (they still have not as of the date of this GoFundMe page), develop applicable policies and procedures for investigation of sexual harassment, and treat accusers with respect and empathy.

Kate started "nicely," in polite meetings and discussions, with suggestions about how the NZSO could do better. It became obvious that this was all lip-service, however. When the NZSO failed to take any substantive action, and actually took direct actions to silence those who they believed supported Kate, Kate began working with journalist, Zoe George. An article is hopefully forthcoming, but as we know, journalism about sexual assault is fraught.

Kate eventually obtained some NZSO documents about her issues through the Official Information Act of New Zealand. This clarified why she was getting nowhere. The NZSO thought she and the investigative journalist were "nuts."

When Kate received this screenshot, she requested more information, to further understand the comment. However, despite providing her earlier information for free, the NZSO now says the cost of further information relating to this statement will cost Kate $2215 New Zealand dollars, which Kate does not have. This is USD $1350. With GoFundMe fees and bank transfer fees (GoFundMe not available for New Zealand), we are seeking $1475. Any additional funding will be immediately donated to RAINN, Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. In fact, it is my hope that this fundraiser will embarrass the NZSO into providing Kate with the information she has requested for free, rather than the $2215. If they change their mind about this--as well they should, if they are a decent public organization, all funds will be donated directly to RAINN.
