Stand with Lebanon! Sonya's campaign for Anera
Tax deductible
Over 220 people were killed in the August 4, 2020 explosion in Beirut's port - over 300,000 were made homeless. As with any catastrophe, the poorest are suffering the most. Anera works with Palestinian and Syrian refugees; this fundraiser will go to Association Najdeh, a feminist local non-profit that does truly transformative work in helping some of Lebanon's poorest and most vulnerable communities with food, education, vocational training and health care. Najdeh doesn't just provide immediate relief and aid, it helps educate and empower.
I lived in Lebanon for 16 years and saw first-hand Association Najdeh's fantastic work. In a campaign to fight domestic violence and sexual harassment, they trained teenagers to hold community theater productions; In offering vocational skills, they encouraged young women to run their own campaigns for local offices. Although Najdeh works mainly with Palestinian refugees, when over a million Syrian refugees sought safety in Lebanon, Najdeh handed out food and medicine; and provided trauma counseling.
Since the explosion, they have been on the streets helping with the clean-up, distributing food and medical packages, and providing mental and emotional support to children and young adults.
