Stand with Maria Rojas: Fight for Reproductive Rights

BREAKING NEWS: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has facilitated the arrest of midwife Maria Margarita Rojas, charging her with providing "illegal abortions."
She faces up to 20 years in prison.
Since this is one of the first major legal cases following Texas's dive deeper into christofascist, anti-woman restrictions on reproductive healthcare, you need to understand that there will be a flurry of misinformation to follow, including but not limited to attacks on Rojas's character, and AG Paxton is using this to further his political status with the current right-wing regime.
Paxton already has a track record of dishonesty in this arena, as his office previously filed a civil suit against New York physician, Dr. Maggie Carpenter. It was falsely claimed that the woman Carpenter sent abortion medication to suffered “serious complications.” There was zero evidence supporting his claim. But they know that just poisoning the waters with misinformation is enough to convince many people of the lie.
Bigotry will play a role in the way this case and cases like it are covered, as in the case of a young woman who was charged with "abuse of a corpse" after a miscarriage. Or when a teen from Nebraska was arrested for aborting her fetus (self-managed from home), the media reported that she had sent a message from a social media account saying that she "can’t wait to get the ‘thing’ out of her body.” Only the quote was not from her but from a law enforcement officer.
It didn't matter, as this misquote was reprinted again and again in an attempt to paint the young woman as heartless as the people who would make reproductive healthcare safe, accessible, and legal.
Even the wording of the article appearing in the Texas Tribune about Maria Rojas's arrest shows clear racial bias by making sure to include that Rojas’ clinics “provided health care to a primarily Spanish-speaking, low-income community.”
It is the ugly truth that AG Paxton specifically targeted Rojas because he believes White America won’t find her sympathetic.
Rojas's income loss and legal fees are already detrimental, so this fund is set up by Army of Jane in an effort to not only offset the impact of this wrongful arrest, but to send a message that we are not Paxton's "White America."
We are people who understand there has always been abortion. Always.
That there will always be abortion. Always.
All abortion bans do is put women at risk and facilitate the unwarranted waste of time and resources in arresting the people who provide the service in a safe environment.
Army of Jane stands with midwife Maria Margarita Rojas in this legal fight.
