Hello,
My name is Maureen Simmons, and I recently moved to Texas in hopes of a fresh start. In just four months, my journey has taken a shocking turn, and I now find myself in a fight for my home, my future, and my sanity.
The Promise of Technology
I moved to Texas to grow my startup, signed a lease with a property managed by Doorstead -- a Y-Combinator backed startup, and thought I was making the right choice. As a startup founder, I understand the value of AI and technology. However, while AI can be a useful tool, it can’t replace the need for human judgment, especially in complex situations. Doorstead’s reliance on technology without human oversight has caused me to experience the nightmare that I’m living today.
What Happened?
In just four months in Texas, I found myself facing an entirely preventable nightmare. I signed a lease with Doorstead, expecting professional management. However, Doorstead failed to properly manage the critical relationship between the property owners and tenants. After I signed a 12-month lease, the property owner terminated their Guaranteed Rent Agreement with Doorstead, leaving me to deal with landlords I didn’t even know existed. Despite paying my rent on time and in full, I was retaliated against by property owners who were upset that Doorstead’s algorithms had priced their home too low. Now, they want me out—despite it being no fault of my own. This entire situation could have been avoided if Doorstead had provided proper oversight and ensured that their technology didn’t leave tenants vulnerable to unscrupulous landlords.
Urgency: 48 Hours To Fight For My Home
I’m now at a crucial crossroads. In just 48 hours, I must come up with $8500 to cover court fees and costs to delay an unlawful eviction and continue fighting for secure housing.
How You Can Help
I simply don’t have the funds to cover these court costs, and that’s where you come in. Any donation—no matter how big or small—will make a huge difference in allowing me to keep fighting and stop this unjust eviction from affecting my future. If you’re unable to contribute financially, sharing this with your network could be just as impactful.
Thank you so much for your support and generosity during this incredibly difficult time. With your help, I can rebuild my life and continue my journey.
With deep gratitude,
Maureen Simmons
