Stand with Mike Cashwell's Family

Hello, I’m Billy Sorochak, CEO of the Ronald McDonald House Charities here in Savannah, Georgia. I wear many hats in my job, but one of the most important is sharing stories. Usually, it’s about RMHC, but today, well this is one of the most important stories I will ever tell. I hope you will listen and join us…

This is about one of the most amazing human beings I have ever met. His name is Mike Cashwell. He is many things in this world- father, husband, RMHC Board Member, and friend. He is a community leader who for the last 12 years has been a hero to so many RMHC children and their families- families that will never know all that he’s done. He has raised tens of thousands of dollars for RMHC. He has ensured that families will stay together during their most difficult times, while additionally providing meals, clothing, transportation- along with hugs and care for those who had no help. He did this because it was the right thing to do. He did this because he has a heart 10X the size of normal…

Like any good origin story, Mike’s would stand out on its own. Local boy stands up for those that needed it the most. Fundraiser for a nonprofit that he did not need to use but supported its mission for the kids. He sells Volvo Cars by day and is a children’s advocate by night. A good story.

Except for one thing. Mike did all the above while constantly fighting his own battle with cancer. Often fundraising from a hospital bed. He never stopped, he never gave up on us, our community, our kids & families or our mission. He was that guy- the guy that didn’t let anything stop him, he was part of the solution, and NEVER, EVER stopped trying. He is the guy who never had to use the Ronald McDonald House, but his care for those children and families was all that mattered to him.

This is one of Mike’s recent posts- one I would like to share with you. Mike posts what he’s feeling, and those of you that know him know he doesn’t sugar coat anything…

From Mike- No more oral chemo meds and no more infusions if you haven’t heard!! I will begin palliative care through Hospice with Heather’s blessing immediately this week. I had two procedures this week and we were looking at a third. Considering the fact that there were no guarantees we made a very difficult decision that we know is for the best.

So that’s the story- the money raised here will support the Cashwell family with their everyday expenses during this extremely challenging moment… here I am with an ask to help Mike and his family- his wife Heather, and daughters Annyston and Abigail. Here’s where we need you. Here is where we say Mike, you are not alone—we will stand with you every step of the way. Wishing you strength and courage.

This is the story…
