Escape from Sudan: A Mother and Four Children in a War Zone
Donation protected
I am Sultan Hassan, and I am organizing this fundraiser on behalf of my sister, Salma Hassan, who is trying to escape the war in Sudan as soon as possible. We are looking for your kind support. Salma is a mother of four children (ages 2 to 10) who, after a real struggle, managed to escape Khartoum to Shendi, a city about 200 km north. She and her children have been living in an elementary school (pictured below) since September 2023, five months after the war began, using it as a temporary shelter. However, the school administration urgently needs to use all classrooms and has asked all families living there to evacuate within 10 days.
To help Salma and her children escape from Sudan to Rwanda, we urgently need the following support:
- Transportation from Shendi to Port Sudan (about 650 km) plus accommodation for two nights: Estimated total = $750. Two nights of accommodation are needed in Port Sudan to prepare for travel (e.g., renew passports and obtain proof of vaccination).
- Airfare tickets from Port Sudan airport to Entebbe airport in Uganda for 1 adult and 4 children: Estimated total = $4,000.
- Visa fees for entry to Uganda: $50 per person (estimated total = $250).
- Accommodation for one night in Uganda: Estimated total = $300.
- Bus from Uganda to Rwanda: $30 per person (estimated total = $150).
- Rent for the first three months: Estimated total = $2,000.
- Home essentials/furniture: Estimated total = $3,000.
- Residency permit per person in Rwanda: $150 per person (estimated total = $750).
This support will help Salma and her children start a new, peaceful life in Kigali, Rwanda.

Brief History of the Recent War in Sudan:
In April 2023, civil war broke out in Sudan, which so far has killed over 14,000 people and displaced over 9 million to other cities and nearby countries. Khartoum, Sudan's capital, which was collectively built by generations over 200 years, has been destroyed in days. Hospitals, universities, clinics, places of worship, and homes are all being targeted by airstrikes and have been severely damaged.
