Sarah Marie is a loving mother who has lost all rights to her children due to domestic violence, a broken system, and a family court judge who has a well documented history of ruling against abused women and giving custody of children to their abusers. She has spent her entire adult life working on behalf of children, obtaining a Masters degree and additional education that gave her the knowledge and credentials to work with children with Autism and as a teacher, author and consultant in that field.

For the first few years of her children’s lives Sarah was essentially their sole caregiver, as their narcissistic father put his career and his own needs above the needs of his family; even refusing to take time off from work (which he was allowed 6 weeks paternity leave) after her second C-section left her in severe pain and caring for a 10 lb newborn and a 3-year-old alone. She nurtured the boys while he worked a job that required long hours and he frequently volunteered to travel for business, sometimes being relocated for months at a time. Sarah Marie not only cared for the children during these absences but also when he was at home; he had little interest in interacting positively with them-often striking or hitting them when they toddled into his office area. The children were bonded with their mother but soon began to fear their father who was impatient, ill tempered, and at times violent with both them and their mother who he would abuse in front of them.

Sarah Marie is my daughter and her children are my grandchildren. As a mother and grandmother, the abuse she and the children have suffered has been heartbreaking. His abuse of her started as psychological and progressed to more viscous verbal attacks, then increasingly violent physical attacks (resulting in ER visits, law enforcement and restraining orders), as well as sexual abuse. Abuse of children also started as increasingly frightening verbal abuse to terrifying physical abuse. My husband and I frequently spent time with the children and on visits to our home they disclosed numerous incidents to us from him hitting them, to being passed out drunk, to being left home alone by their father when they were 4 and 7 (when Sarah asked him to move out of the home and he moved into an apartment over a busy bar and nightclub).

When Sarah reported the abuse she and the children were further abused by the justice system and DHHS who failed to fully investigate the history of domestic violence in the home. She was denied her due process rights in court REPEATEDLY and the Family Court Judge, who denied her her lawyer, witnesses, and evidence, favored the abusive father and his family-despite having the opportunity to review evidence and testimony from therapists, law enforcement, and medical professionals on her behalf. No one in their maternal family is allowed to have any contact with the children as their father refuses to allow it and the courts have given sole custody of the children to their father, who the boys often described to us as “that guy that hurts us.” You cannot imagine how this has impacted us all, undoubtedly the children most because they have no-one to defend them or advocate for them.

Sarah Marie has attempted to correct the situation through civil hearings regarding custody and visitation, however she continues to be denied her rights and ANY contact with the children. To make it worse Sarah Marie had retained an attorney, whose exorbitant fee was paid by her family, and then later found out that that attorney had fraudulently billed for her services (which were not provided), putting Sarah in a FAR worse position than when she was appointed. This attorney is currently being prosecuted by the state of Maine for fraud.  

Our family has depleted all of our resources and are now, in need of $16,500 to cover defense costs, civil actions regarding custody of her children and to pay an expert witness who is highly knowledgeable about the prevalence of abuse of protective mothers by the family court system.
