Standing Together for Beckett
Donation protected
The Weiss family needs support, and you can help. Until recently, Beckett was the same 6-year-old boy we've always known: bright, curious, spirited, and full of energy. But since a viral and bacterial infection a few weeks ago, things changed dramatically in Beckett's behavior. Claire, Derek, and other people in Beckett's life started noticing alarming episodes, and after three frightening ER visits, Beckett was admitted to BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver for neurological testing. He's now undergoing extensive testing at BC Children's, including MRI, EEG, lumbar puncture, other tests, and ongoing psychiatric support. The doctors are working to rule out the most serious neurological conditions first and will go from there. We're all immensely grateful for our medical system and BC Children's Hospital staff. Getting a proper diagnosis, and timely treatment is critical to Beckett’s future.
However, the family is now facing significant financial and emotional challenges. All these tests take time, and we don’t know how long treatment will take. Claire has had to temporarily suspend her private practice to be with him, resulting in a complete loss of her primary income. Derek is currently between jobs. With the hospital over an hour from their home in Langley, they’re also incurring substantial costs from daily travel, accommodations for overnight stays (so they can spell off), meals, and other support.
At the same time, Claire is managing her own serious health conditions. As a self-employed professional, Claire has done everything possible to provide for Beckett while navigating her own disabilities. However, after months of medical crises, her ability to work has been significantly impacted, and Derek and Claire's savings have been depleted.
Derek and Claire have given a lot to their communities over the years as friends, mentors, professionals, and guides. Claire has dedicated her career to supporting others. As a Registered Clinical Counsellor, advocate for trauma-informed and disability-inclusive care, and mentor to fellow therapists, Claire has given tirelessly to her community. Derek has served the community through his full-time work with charities in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver and elsewhere over the last 18 years. They're incredible co-parents and it would be amazing if you could help them out.
Here’s how your support will help:
- Lost Income: To help offset Claire’s lost earnings while her private practice is closed.
- Accommodation: Costs for hotels or rentals near the hospital to ensure Beckett always has a family member nearby.
- Daily Essentials: Meals and essential living expenses while away from home.
- Childcare and Household Support: Additional care and support at home when he gets home.
- Treatment not covered in BC: Beckett may need treatment or care not covered by government programs.
Because of these expenses and the loss of income to care for Beckett, the family estimates needing approximately $14,000 to navigate the next several weeks. Derek and Claire have established a dedicated account for these funds and are committed to providing regular updates on Beckett’s condition and how your generosity is supporting them during this difficult journey.
We deeply appreciate all forms of support:
- Give through this account. Even a little bit helps. It will go directly to help Beckett and his parents.
- Sharing our campaign widely.
- Sending messages of encouragement.
- Assisting with practical tasks if you're local.
Your kindness will remind them that they're not alone in this fight. Thank you for standing with Beckett, Claire, and Derek. Your generosity means the world to Beckett and the family.
All donations will go directly to Derek and Claire's joint account.
