Starsailor - Send Your Name To Space
Donation protected
We aspire to become the first university team to build and launch a liquid-propelled rocket to space.
Despite numerous obstacles, including our university and machine shop closure due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing shortage of funds, we have been able to design, build, and test the largest civilian rocket in Canada, and the world:
Starsailor's engine was first successfully tested in the summer of 2021. The test became a world-record-setting event: the largest rocket engine developed and fired by civilians.
Why Is Starsailor Important To All Canadians?
Starsailor will pave the way for future space-launch projects in Canada. The Space Concordia Rocketry Division is working closely with Transport Canada; helping to establish procedures and best practices for experimental space-launch vehicles in Canada.
History & Accomplishments
The team, founded in 2014 with 10 members, has since seen hundreds of aspiring rocket scientists and engineers contribute to ongoing research. We are currently one of the most prominent engineering, research & development (ER&D) teams at Concordia University.
In our early days, we participated in the Spaceport America Cup, the world’s largest rocketry competition, attended by over 125 international universities. Over the years, we have won multiple 1st place accolades and defeated top schools such as Stanford, MIT, Caltech, and McGill.
To view one of our previous rockets, Supersonice (2018):
Our current goal is to complete the Starsailor project, and advance the frontiers of science by fostering world-class ER&D, hands-on training, and community involvement.
STEAM Initiatives
In addition to carrying out our ER&D work, our members also dedicate their time to initiatives promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) education.
Throughout the year, we organize and present at conferences, host tutorials to demystify science concepts and help facilitate outreach events at various institutions. To date, we have engaged with over 20,000 young Canadians, promoting involvement in STEAM.
Fundraising
To safely launch and recover Starsailor, we must perform comprehensive training, testing and staging.
We are raising funds to finance the final two phases of our project: Integration and Testing. In addition to crowdfunding, the team is pursuing both public and private funding pathways.
