Starter funds for Ukrainian refugee family
Meet the Luhovyi family: Nazar and Oksana and their three daughters Viktoriia (18), Dominika (14), and Yarynka (7). They had a good life in Kyiv until Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, and are among the millions displaced because of the war. As a result of the dire situation, the US government created a special visa program for people like the Luhovyi's. Americans can sponsor visas for Ukrainians to come live in America for at least two years. I met them through a program called Welcome Connect, which connects refugees to potential sponsors, and decided to sponsor them! They will be arriving in Salt Lake City on Monday, July 24th and need some help starting a new life here in America. They'll stay with me until they can secure their own housing. Unfortunately, they have to leave all of their belongings except for what they can fit in airline luggage. Welcome Connect recommends $3,000 per person as starter funds so I'm raising a total of $15,000 for the family to help them until they can secure employment and become self-sufficient.
