Stay Home, Stay Healthy: COVID-19 Food Relief ATX
The Stay Home, Stay Healthy Grocery Delivery Program by Good Apple aims to support Austin and Travis county by delivering food to people who most need to protect themselves from the threat posed by coronavirus (COVID-19).
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to disruptions in all of our lives. To stop its spread, the CDC recommends that we practice social distancing and protect the most vulnerable members of our community - the elderly and the immunocompromised.
We want to ensure these members of our community have convenient access to the food they need without risking exposure by delivering them a relief box with fresh produce, canned goods, and other essential resources.
How it works:
1) Good Apple is coordinating with our local farm partners and food pantries to source produce and pantry staples.
2) Teams of healthy volunteers, in groups of less than 10, pack the food relief boxes and deliver them directly to the homes of individuals in need, via "no-contact" drop-offs.
3) Each relief box will contain enough food to last one person for one week and should entirely replace a trip to the grocery store.
What's in each box?
Our team has worked with local UT nutritionists to develop menus for our elderly neighbors. Examples of items included in the box are:
Grocery Staples:
-Low fat milk
-Fortified cereal
-Canned Veggies (e.g., beans, spinach)
-Canned Fruit
-Canned protein (e.g., chicken, tuna)
-Peanut Butter
-Bread
-Rice
-Pasta
Fresh Produce:
-Spring Mix/Cabbage
-Spinach
-Broccoli
-White Sweet Potatoes
-Red Potatoes
How you can help:
1) Donate Money to this Campaign (most needed)
Each box costs about $10 to source, pack, and deliver. We hope to deliver 2,000 grocery boxes within the next four weeks. Any amount of support goes a long way to protecting the health of our most vulnerable neighbors.
2) Sign-up to Volunteer
We're also looking for healthy volunteers to help pack and deliver - join the mailing list at goodapplefoods.com for more information on how to help, or sign up to volunteer here.
Why Good Apple:
Good Apple is an Austin based produce delivery service on a mission to end food insecurity. Our team is passionate about addressing the food needs of our Austin community, specifically by increasing grocery delivery services to families facing food insecurity. Our team has developed an expertise in connecting important community partners together-- from farmers to physicians-- to address food insecurity, and we believe we can leverage our existing infrastructure to meet the heightened needs of our community. On a personal note:
I've lived in Austin almost my entire life. I grew up here, and I love it here. There are so many things that make this city great, but our strongest asset is our people. Our community is strong, caring, and connected - when we come together as neighbors to help one another, we can weather any crisis.
A $10 donation can minimize one person's exposure risk and contain the spread of a deadly virus. If that's all it takes, it's so worth it.
