STI Documentary

BACKGROUND ON PROJECT
When was the last time you thought about your sexual education? Did you feel prepared to have conversations about STIs/STDs with your partners? According to the CDC, 1 in 5 people have an STI, totaling 68 million people. In 2018, almost half of new STIs were among youth between 15- 24 years old.
Meanwhile, in the U.S., our school-based sex education leaves much to be desired. Only 29 states mandate sex education; only 18 of these states require educators to teach about contraception and only 15 require that information is medically accurate. Even if someone has access to sex education, the curriculums don't always focus on the interpersonal communication aspects of sex. Adding to this, young people are usually not taught how to live (and thrive!) with an STI should they get one. No wonder we are confused and unprepared!
OUR FILM
Our goal for this ~20-minute film is to break down stigmas through interviews and conversations with people living with STIs. We’ll show examples of ways to disclose this information to partners and explain how it is possible to be and feel empowered as an STI-positive person. We hope this film will help people learn about STIs while normalizing (and humanizing) the experience of living with an STI.
