Hello, my name is Jordana Castro. I am a local here in Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo MX. I have lived here for almost 45 years.

Reyna and I have been close friends since she was 6 years old when her family relocated here from the US. Our families have been friends ever since. We went to many years of school together and have lots of happy childhood memories, she is a beautiful, positive, joyful person, and someone who has been there for me in difficult times.

When people ask me how I speak English so well I would always credit Reyna, as we spent many evenings after school watching movies in English - no subtitles- at her house. Remember The Goonies, well that was our favorite.

As a teenager and young woman, Reyna loved to dance, to be out on boats with her family, and was always surrounded by close friends and family.

Reyna is super friendly and someone who would always greet you with a warm smile, happy to help in any way she can, even strangers. I think this is the reason why she has so many friends. She followed her dad’s tradition of bringing candy to kids during Christmas, which also inspired her to organize events for the kids at every holiday (Christmas, Easter and Hallowe’en) She always knew how to bring the community together for fun-filled activities.

Now, as a single mom, she is devoted to her daughter and has made sure to raise her well, with the same values she has, her daughter is a thriving, happy, spirited little girl who is involved in many hobbies and activities, and who also loves to dance :-)

Through all these years Reyna has stayed the same; kind, caring, and approachable. She is a staple of our community.

Reyna’s Difficult Journey Living with Transverse Myelitis

On September 15, 2020 - Mexican Independence Day – Reyna’s battle with independence started. She woke up and could not move.

Reyna’s family surrounded her and was there to help. Due to the holiday, Reyna could not be seen by specialists so her brother went to our local brilliant Dr Ballesteros with her X Rays and he prescribed the first medication to bring back some feeling in her toes along with some hope.

A neurologist discovered through MRIs that Reyna had suddenly developed a condition called Transverse Myelitis affecting her T3 through to T8. This is the part of the spinal cord tied to movement from the waist down.

She was given medication to help bring down the pain and spasms and to help her sleep. She was referred to a physiotherapist who she continues to work with to this day.

Reyna was in bed for a full 6 months unable to move. To have a shower, she had to be lifted into her wheelchair and wheeled out to the backyard where she would have to wash herself with a garden hose.

Through sheer determination and painstaking therapy, Reyna fought her way out of bed and was finally able to spend her days in a wheelchair. Her therapy involved grueling hours practicing getting out of her wheelchair and getting on the ground to learn to crawl. Once there, she had to learn how to stay on her hands and knees and stabilize in that position without collapsing. Once she learned to stabilize in that position, she had to learn to move one leg forward at a time; first with the soldier move, moving only her arms and then learning to make her hips move behind them.

Reyna told me of this experience:

“Most people don’t remember learning to crawl or what is to have to relearn to coordinate the simple things, like directing your mind and willing it to move a body part. This is automatic to most and having to re-learn this as an adult, well, it is extremely difficult and humbling. I’m not even sure what is harder, the therapy itself or the patience required to get through it.”

After a painful and physically demanding year in a wheelchair, and doing rehab to learn to stand and sit, Reyna worked her way to a walker. This too was painstaking as she could only move a meter at a time and then needed to rest. Four months into doing this routing with her physiotherapist and using the walker, Reyna bravely transitioned to using crutches. This was a heroic feat, and I was so proud of her.

To this day Reyna has a very difficult time with steps and is limited on where she can go based on accessibility and flat surfaces. As you can imagine in a town with so many uneven surfaces, dangerous sidewalks, potholes and other hazards, Reyna is overcoming incredible challenges every minute of her day. Most of us could never imagine the degree of patience and determination Reyna has to have just to leave her house and get through her day. There are physical barriers in her way everywhere she goes, she can't get around in grocery stores, parking lots, sidewalks and most businesses. She faces non-stop challenges from sunrise to sunset. What many of us take for granted is that Puerto Morelos is a town with only one elevator and very little designated disabled parking – there are only three spots in the whole town. Simply finding a restaurant she can enjoy based on accessible washrooms, parking and a flat surface from which to enter simply does not exist. Don’t even get her started about what a challenge it is for her to be able to enjoy time at the beach. Something that most of us locals can just enjoy anytime we like.

Despite all that she has faced, Reyna has maintained her career in property management – you may know her from KAAM accommodations (a group of three rental buildings) here in Puerto Morelos or from her work as the consulate liaison for the US EMBASSY in Cancun. Reyna is also very active and hands-on at her daughter’s school.

A Turning Point Leading to the GoFundMe request for donations

Determined to walk again unassisted and to have feeling back in her lower extremities, Reyna recently had a consultation with Dr. Victor Ballesteros here in Puerto Morelos to discuss treatment options. Simply put, at this time if Reyna should have any hope to live with less pain and regain her full mobility she has to consider more advanced and novel treatments. Dr. Ballesteros has prepared a full protocol for Reyna that he is very optimistic will help restore her mobility and reduce the pain she experiences in her daily life living with Transverse Myelitis. This protocol involves a number of treatments – including neural therapy, serums to stimulate the healing of her nerves and also stem cell therapy. To do the complete first rounds of this protocol Reyna will need approximately $12,000 USD or $180,000 pesos. Dr. Ballesteros has generously offered a deep discount to Reyna for these treatments out of his compassion and kindness. The treatments would be double or triple the cost anywhere else in the world. Dr. Victor has shared with Reyna that he has seen very positive outcomes for others with conditions similar to hers and he believes her mobility will eventually be restored with ongoing treatment.

It should also be noted that until now Reyna has been paying out of pocket for all her medical treatments and assessments. For example, to date, she has had 5 MRIs at the cost 10,000 pesos each and has been paying for a physiotherapist three times a week for 3 years as well as her doctor’s visits and medication.

Given the severity of her condition, Reyna may need to do several rounds of the stem cells. This is why we are reaching out to you for help because this medical intervention Reyna so desperately needs and deserves will only be possible with your generosity and kind hearts. Through it all Reyna has maintained such a positive attitude and is still smiling, keeping her struggles mostly to herself until now. Querido lector,

Mi nombre es Jordana Castro soy una local aquí en Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo MX. He vivido aquí por casi 45 años.

Reyna y yo hemos sido amigas muy cercanas desde los 6 años cuando su familia se reubico aquí desde Estados Unidos. Nuestras familias han sido amigas desde entonces. Fuimos juntas por muchos años a las misma escuela y tenemos muchos recuerdos felices de nuestra infancia, ella es una persona hermosa, positiva, alegre e inclusive a estado para mi en mis momentos mas difíciles.

Cuando las personas me preguntan por que hablo Ingles tan bien siempre la acredito, ya que pasábamos muchas tardes después de la escuela viendo películas en Ingles -sin subtítulos- en su casa. Recuerdan la película de los Goonies, bueno pues esa era nuestra película favorita.

Como una adolescente y mujer joven, a Reyna le gustaba bailar, salir en barco con la familia y siempre estaba rodeada de amigos cercanos y de su familia.

Reyna es super amigable, alguien que siempre te recibe con una calurosa sonrisa, feliz de ayudar de cualquier posible manera en que lo pueda hacer, inclusive a los que no conoce. Pienso que esta es la razón por la cual tiene tantos amigos, Ella siguió la tradición de su papá al llevar dulces en Navidad a los chicos, esto también la inspiró a organizar eventos para los chicos durante cada festividad como Navidad, Pascua inclusive en Halloween. Ella siempre ha sabido como unir a la comunidad para estas actividades llenas de diversion.

Ahora, siendo madre soltera, ella esta dedicada a su hija asegurándose de criarla bien, con los mismos valores que ella recibió, su hija es una niña feliz y energética que participa en muchos hobbies, actividades y al igual ama bailar.

A travez de estos años Reyna sigue siendo la misma persona noble, cariñosa y accesible. “Ella es un sello de nuestra comunidad.”

LA JORNADA DIFICIL DE VIVIR CON MIELITIS TRANSVERSA PARA REYNA

El 15 de Septiembre, 2020 - Día del Grito de Independencia en Mexico - Reyna empezó su propia batalla con la independencia. Ella despertó sin poder moverse.

Su familia la rodeó y estaba ahí para ayudarla, debido a que era un día festivo Reyna no pudo ver a un especialista, así que su hermano llevó las placas de Rayos X al brillante Doctor Ballesteros de la localidad quien le prescribió el primer medicamento para devolverle algo de sensación a sus pies al igual que algo de esperanza.

Un neurólogo a travez de la resonancia magnética descubrió que Reyna había desarrollado una condición llamada MIELITIS TRANSVERSA afectando desde el hueso T3 hasta el T8. Esta es la parte de la columna espinal relacionada con el movimiento de la cintura para abajo.

Se le dio medicamento para que le disminuyera el dolor y los espasmos al igual que ayudarla a dormir. Le recomendaron fisioterapia la cual continua tomando hasta hoy día.

Reyna estuvo en cama por 6 meses, sin poder moverse, sin poder bañarse, había que levantarla y ponerla en una silla de ruedas, llevarla al patio para que se pudiera bañar con una manguera.

A travez de pura determinación y esmerada terapia, Reyna luchó para levantarse de la cama y finalmente pudo pasar días en una silla de ruedas. A partir de ese momento su terapia involucró horas extenuantes practicando levantarse de la silla de ruedas y gatear en el suelo. A Una vez en el suelo tuvo que aprender a mantenerse en las manos y en las rodillas y estabilizarse en esa posición sin caerse. Una vez que lo logró, tuvo que aprender a mover una pierna a la vez; primero con el movimiento de soldado, moviendo solo sus brazos y después aprendiendo a hacer que sus caderas se movieran detrás… aprendió a gatear de nuevo.

Reyna me contó de esta experiencia:

“ Muchas personas no recuerdan como aprendieron a gatear o lo que es tener que volver a aprender a coordinar cosas tan sencillas, como dirigir a tu mente y estar dispuesta a mover una parte del cuerpo. Para la mayoría esto funciona en automático y tener que volver a aprender como un adulto, bueno, es extremadamente difícil y una gran lección de humildad. No estoy segura que es mas difícil, la terapia por si sola o la paciencia que se requiere para salir de esto.”

Después de un año doloroso y demandante en silla de ruedas y haciendo las terapias para aprender a levantarse y a sentarse, Reyna a trabajado para lograr usar una caminadora. Esto también fue minucioso ya que solo podia moverse un metro a la vez y luego tenia que descansar. Cuatro meses de hacer esta rutina con su fisioterapeuta y usando la caminadora, Reyna valientemente ha pasado al uso de muletas. Esto sin duda ha sido una hazaña heroica y estoy muy orgullosa de ella.

Hoy día, Reyna, tiene un momento muy difícil con las escaleras y se encuentra limitada a lugares donde ir basado en superficies planas y sus accesos. Como pueden imaginar en el pueblo con tantas superficies disparejas, banquetas peligrosas, baches y otros peligros, Reyna esta superando retos increíbles a cada minuto de su día aquí en Puerto Morelos. Muchos de nosotros no nos imaginamos el grado de paciencia y determinación que Reyna tiene que tener solo para poder salir de casa y atravesar su día. Lo que mucho de nosotros no sabemos es que Puerto Morelos es un pueblo con un solo elevador y con muy poco espacio delimitado para la gente con discapacidad, estacionamientos, solo hay tres en todo el pueblo. Simplemente encontrar un restaurante con acceso al baño para discapacitados, un estacionamiento y una superficie plana para que ella entre no existe. No empecemos con el reto que es ser capaz de disfrutar una ida a la playa algo que mucho de nosotros los locales podemos hacer en el momento que deseemos.

A pesar de todos estos retos que Reyna ha afrontado, su carrera como Administrador de Propiedades - mucho la conocen de Grupo KAAM ( un grupo de tres edificios para Renta vacacional ) aquí en Puerto Morelos o de su trabajo como enlace con ante el Consulado Americano en Cancun. Reyna también está muy involucrada y se mantiene activa con la escuela de su hija.

UN PUNTO DE INFLEXION QUE ME CONDUCE AL GOFUND ME PETICION DE FONDOS

Determinada a volver a caminar sin asistencia y con el deseo de sentir en su espalda baja y sus extremidades inferiores Reyna tuvo una consulta con el Dr Ballesteros aquí en Puerto Morelos para discutir las varias opciones de tratamiento. Para decirlo de una forma mas sencilla, si Reyna llegase a tener esperanza de vivir con menos dolor y recuperar movimiento tiene que considerar tratamientos mas avanzados y novedosos. Dr Ballesteros ha preparado un protocolo completo para Reyna, él está optimistico que le ayudará a recuperar su movilidad y reducir los dolores que Reyna experimenta en su día a día vivir con Myelitis Transversa. Este protocolo lleva un numero de tratamientos - incluyendo Terapia Neural, Sueros para estimular la sanación de los nervios y también Terapia de células madre. Para la primera ronda de este protocolo Reyna va a necesitar aproximadamente $12,000 USD o unos $180,000 pesos. El Dr Ballesteros a ofrecido darle generosamente un descuento a Reyna ya que este tipo de tratamiento cuesta el doble o el triple en cualquier otra parte del mundo. Dr Victor le ha dicho a Reyna que él ha visto resultados positivos en otros pacientes con condiciones similares a las de ella y cree que su movilidad eventualmente puede ser restaurada con un tratamiento continuo.

Cabe destacar que hasta ahora Reyna ha estado pagando de su propio bolsillo los tratamientos que la han llevado hasta ahora. Por ejemplo, a la fecha se ha hecho 5 Resonancias Magnéticas a un costo de $10,000 pesos cada una, ha estado pagando su fisioterapeuta tres veces por semana por 3 años al igual que las visitas al medico y sus medicamentos.

Dada la condición severa de Reyna, ella tendrá que tomar varias rondad de Terapia de Células Madre. Es por ello que estamos tratando de llegar a ustedes para solicitar de su ayuda para la intervención medica que Reyna necesita y se merece y solamente será posible con la ayuda de su generosidad y nobles corazones. A pesar de todo Reyna se ha mantenido con una actitud positiva, aun sonrie, se ha guardado sus luchas hasta ahora. Este hermoso ser humano, amiga y madre ha dado mucho - ahora tiene la oportunidad de caminar sin ayuda de nuevo, demostremos cuanto nos importa y la apreciamos ayudándola a recaudar el dinero que necesita!
