Ruben Centre- Empowering the Mukuru Community
On the 28th of November, a small group of seven will be STEPPING up to the rooftop of Africa, Mt Kilimanjaro. We will STEP up to a height of 5,895 meters.
We are hoping to reach the summit in support of the Ruben Centre which is based in Nairobi where Aidan and Francesca are currently STEPPING around, volunteering for 8 weeks.
The Ruben Centre supports 2700 children from the local Mukuru Slum to attend school, many who take hundreds of STEPS to simply get to school each day. There is are also 23 other initiatives, including a Vocational Training program and a Special Needs Education Centre. The centre also runs many health programs that support the local community, including the Ruben Medical Clinic, the Lea Toto program (caring for children living with HIV), a Baby Care Centre and a Child Doctor Program.
There is a social and economic empowerment, covering programmes like Stop Child Labour, Sexual and Gender Based Violence and a programme for Orphans and Vulnerable Children.
Currently the Centre is taking a STEP towards building a Birthing Suite for the local Mothers. Without this, many mothers are forced to take countless STEPS to the nearest hospital, as there is no road access. With our STEPS and yours, we will be able to play a big part in making this happen. All money raised will be a STEP directly towards buying incubators and medical supplies needed for this unit.
