The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is at the forefront of research, education and prevention initiatives designed to reduce loss of life from suicide. With over 49,300 lives lost each year in the U.S. and over 1,000,000 lives lost worldwide, the importance of our mission has never been greater, nor our work more urgent. Suicide deaths reached another ALL-TIME RECORD high in the US in 2023 and has increased dramatically over the past few years. 13.2 million people thought about suicide last year -- chances are you know someone close to you who has thought about suicide.
* There were 49,300 deaths by suicide in the US in 2023 alone (MORE than the number of deaths from breast cancer) - that's an average of 135 deaths by suicide PER DAY.
* There are 1.7M suicide attempts last year (this number is most likely under-reported). There are 4x more suicide attempts than breast cancer diagnoses, yet suicide is much less visible and still more stigmatized.
* There are 1M global deaths by suicide each year
* 1 in 5 high school students have thought about suicide
* 1 in 10 college kids have thought about suicide
* 1 in 3 people will have a diagnosed DSM illness in their lifetime, resulting in a tremendous loss in employee productivity
