Stephanie’s Brain Surgery & Recovery

I am Stephanie’s mom. My daughter, although 35 years of age, will always be my little girl.

She has overcome so many hardships, struggles and obstacles in the past 2 years. Now with her life on a positive track, she suffered a medical emergency. What we initially thought to be a possible stroke, turned out to be a Chiari Malformation; which is where the brain herniated through the bottom of the cranium and into the spinal column. There a fluid-filled cyst developed, causing migraine headaches, and ultimately all of the symptoms which mimicked a stroke.

Surgery is a must to repair the herniated brain and remove the cyst. It’s a MAJOR brain surgery; about 4.5 hours. The neurosurgeon will make an 8 inch cut into the back of her skull, remove the top vertebrae and go into the spinal column microscopically. After the cyst is removed and the swelling eliminated, the herniated area of the brain should retract into the base of the skull. A patch is placed into the spinal column to help strengthen the area. The removed vertebrae is not replaced.

Recovery is estimated to be approximately 6 weeks if everything goes well.

Medical insurance will only cover so much. The costs of medicines, rehabilitation services and daily expenses will far exceed what little funds she has. I as her mother will do as much as I can with what little resources I have.

ANY amount; a few dollars…all will add up and help in this desperate time.

She has come so far…and now this. Her 4-year old son adores her and needs her in his life as well. Anything anyone can do would be so greatly appreciated.

This surgery is not elective and must be done to prevent possible permanent damage to her body. It is being scheduled for some time in September providing she is cleared medically to undergo such a serious and dangerous surgery.
