Stephen Knight learned during his recovery from meth addiction that people often delay or forgo substance abuse treatment because they cannot find safe housing for their pets. After fostering a friend’s dog so she could enter rehab, Knight started a group that provides foster homes for pets so their owners can seek help. His organization, Dogs Matter, covers the animal’s expenses for the foster family and provides post-rehab services, support, and financial assistance to help their human participants succeed with their sobriety. Dogs Matter has assisted more than 1,200 dogs and their owners since 2015. Through its partnership with Dallas Pets Alive! (DPA), Dogs Matter has access to the DPA volunteer foster network and can offer a safe and healthy environment for pets while clients are seeking inpatient treatment, and if necessary, until they are healthy and stable enough to take care of their pet again.
