Help School in Nepal

In december 2023 gaan wij met zes Wageningse studievriendinnen o.l.v. jaargenoot en bergbeklimmer Katja Staartjes op stap in Nepal. Om eens te kijken waar zij nou op haar best is; niet alleen wat betreft wandelen/klimmen maar ook voor de lokale bevolking. Katja en haar partner Henk waren in 2015 tijdens de grote aardbeving ter plekke en hebben vanaf dat moment hun ondersteuning aan Nepal via Stichting Topaspiraties uitgebreid. Zo zijn er een aantal huizen herbouwd en is financiële hulp geboden aan een medische post en twee scholen. Een tweetal van deze projecten gaan we bezoeken tijdens onze wandeltocht door het gebied Solo.

Het is een spannende uitdaging om deze tocht te maken. Zijn we fit genoeg als 60-ers? Hoe reageren we op de hoogte? Wat betekent het voor onze jarenlange vriendschap? Hoe is het om dag en nacht onder redelijk primitieve omstandigheden met elkaar op te trekken?

Naast deze uitdaging gaan we een tweede uitdaging aan. We kunnen ten slotte niet met lege handen aankomen! We gaan dan ook geld inzamelen voor de Shree Himalaya Secondary school in het dorp Basa/Khastap, op zo’n 2000 meter hoogte, ca. 60 km ten zuiden van de Mount Everest. Hier volgen zo’n 300 kinderen/jongeren van 6 tot 18 jaar onderwijs.

Waar worden de donaties aan besteed?

• Er is behoefte aan een digitaal display voor interactieve lessen en presentaties. Het is bekend dat veel jeugd naar de hoofdstad Kathmandu trekt voor onderwijs. Veel beter is het echter, als de jeugd in de thuisregio blijft en hier naar school gaat. Meegaan in de digitalisering is daarbij een must. Eerder ondersteunde Stichting Topaspiraties de school al met laptops en een beamer. Sinds kort is er beter internet, waardoor de mogelijkheden flink uitgebreid zijn op onderwijsgebied. Daar zijn dan wel de juiste digitale middelen voor nodig.

• Er is een tekort aan houten tafels en banken voor de leerlingen. Deze worden in de omgeving gemaakt, waardoor ook werkgelegenheid gecreëerd wordt.

• Er is de wens om te beschikken over meer sport-attributen. Tenslotte bevordert sport de gezondheid en het plezier. Ook hier heeft Stichting Topaspiraties al iets betekend door sport-attributen en een accordeon te financieren. Extra materiaal is echter meer dan welkom, ook omdat de huidige spullen goed gebruikt worden en slijten.

Wij gaan de opbrengst van de donaties ter plekke overhandigen. Wat zou het mooi zijn als we ons streefbedrag van €8000 gaan halen. We zijn gelukkig al goed op weg...

In December 2023, we, six study friends from Wageningen, led by our fellow student and mountaineer Katja Staartjes, are going on a trip to Nepal. Our goal is to see where she excels, not only in hiking/climbing but also in helping the local population. Katja and her partner Henk were in Nepal during the major earthquake in 2015 and have since expanded their support to Nepal through the ”Topaspiraties” Foundation. They have rebuilt several houses and provided financial assistance to a medical post and two schools. We will be visiting two of these projects during our trek through the Solo region.

It's an exciting challenge to make this journey. Are we fit enough as 60-year-olds? How will we react to the altitude? What does it mean for our long-standing friendship? What is it like to spend day and night together under relatively primitive conditions?

In addition to this challenge, we are taking on a second challenge. After all, we can't arrive empty-handed! We are raising money for the Shree Himalaya Secondary school in the village of Basa/Khastap, located at an altitude of about 2000 meters, approximately 60 km south of Mount Everest. About 300 children/young people aged 6 to 18 receive their education at this school.

What will the donations be used for?

• There is a need for a digital display for interactive lessons and presentations. It is known that many young people go to the capital, Kathmandu, for education. However, it is much better if the youth stays in their home region and attends school here. Going digital is a must in this regard. The Topaspirations Foundation has previously supported the school with laptops and a projector. With better internet connectivity, the possibilities for education have greatly expanded, but the right digital tools are needed.

• There is a shortage of wooden tables and benches for the students. These are made in the local area, creating job opportunities.

• There is a desire to have more sports equipment. After all, sports promote health and enjoyment. The Topaspirations Foundation has already made a difference by financing sports equipment and an accordion. However, additional material is more than welcome, as the current equipment is well-used and wearing out.

We will personally hand over the proceeds of the donations on-site. It would be wonderful if we could reach our target amount of €8000. Fortunately, we are already well on our way...
