Steve Barleys Fight Against Meningoencephalitis

Steve, better known as ‘Sugar', has a very rare auto immune meningoencephalitis. Auto immunity is when your immune system “attacks” your organs and in Sugar's case, this has caused severe inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord with the cause being unknown. He has been in a coma and ventilated with a tracheostomy for a couple of weeks receiving strong immunosuppressive treatments including chemotherapy.

The path to recovery will be slow and long and he will need intensive rehabilitation. His wife Laura has been by his bedside throughout and will remain on extended leave.

Sugar is receiving state of the art care in the intensive care unit at RPA and we are all

hopeful that he makes a full recovery and can return to the job he loves with all of you.
