For the past five years, Steve Hester has been Director of Music at the First United Methodist Church in Conyers, Georgia. In that time, Steve’s ministry has reached far beyond our great choirs and touched many in our church and our community. He has taught us to glorify God and minister to others through our music and singing.
Steve and his wife, Debbie, have been married for 38 years, and have raised three children, Adriene, Cameron, and Kyndall. Their family now includes two sons-in-law, Ashton and Jacob.
Steve and Debbie have been in ministry all of their marriage. This hasn’t always been an easy journey for them, and there have been times of struggles and trials. Nonetheless, there has never been a time when they have not felt the presence of our Mighty God.
Nothing could have prepared them for the challenge they have faced in the last two months. On Tuesday, April 10, 2018, Steve came home with a terrible headache. He rested for a while, then took his blood pressure which was very high.
The next morning, Debbie was at work when she received a call from the ER at Fayette Piedmont Hospital. Steve had suffered a severe stroke that left him unable to speak and move one side of his body. At that moment, he was being intubated and plans were being made to life-flight him to Atlanta. It was uncertain if Steve would make it alive to Emory Hospital.
There is every chance that Steve will make a full recovery and be able to return to his ministry at Conyers First United Methodist Church. His miraculous progress over the past two months is testimony to God’s healing power.
We have started this GoFundMe campaign to provide tangible evidence of our love and compassion for such a fine man, and to help Steve and his family

Steve spent 10 days in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit. Towards the end of his stay, one of the doctors said “I don’t know if you believe in God, but I do. The fact that Steve is still here is a miracle.” Debbie will never forget those words. Our God walks beside us every second of every day. Pause and seek Him, and you will find Him.
Steve was moved to the Emory Acute Rehabilitation Hospital on April 21 and stayed three weeks. He was well enough to be discharged home on May 12 and continues to make good progress. He is able to walk, and is working on the methods he learned from his therapists to improve his strength and speech.

cope with the financial stress they are now experiencing.
Thus far, they have accumulated more than $250,000 in medical bills. Their medical insurance will cover some of this, but, unbeknownst to them, there have been instances, such as the life flight to Emory Hospital, when they were out-of-network.
