Steve Thornton Aneurysm Rehabilitation

Donation protected

Steve Thornton is our Brother, Husband, Father and Grandfather and he had a bleeding brain aneurysm for 6 days before it was operated on.
A week before Christmas, Steve had an excruciating headache and was vomiting. He thought it was the flu. For days he wasn’t getting better.
The red flags started when he had a car accident and didn’t remember having it. He went to Emergency at Rochester General Hospital where they diagnosed him with a bleeding brain aneurysm. This was five days after the headache. They tried to stop the bleeding with a coil but it was too risky. The Aneurysm was between the right and left hemisphere.
From there, he was transferred to Strong Memorial Hospital. They couldn’t get a team of neurosurgeons that night. The next day he had a seven hour brain surgery.  The aneurysm had ruptured but the surgeons were able to save him.
Steve was in critical condition for two weeks in ICU. Eventually, he was transferred to a regular care unit for people with brain injuries and had to have a feeding tube inserted. He cannot swallow because of the aneurysm and being intubated in ICU.

Steve is now at the Golisano Restorative Neurology & Rehabilitation Center at Unity and is at the first stage of cognitive development. Steve has a very long road to recovery. The recommended treatment after discharge is speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. His wife Lynne needs to work to pay for the Health Insurance and will need to take family leave to tend to Steve’s needs and get him to appointments if that's possible. Next week they are considering sending him home. Steve will need 24 hour Medical care that may not be covered by Insurance. If you know Steve and are able to help with the time to be trained to care and help us cover him in Love and attention to get to Therapy appointments, for he won't be able to be left alone at home for quite a while.

Your donations of time and money will help the family with medical expenses that are not covered by insurance. One ambulance bill was $1200 and that isn’t covered under their insurance with New York State healthcare. They have a $6000 deductible before co-pays kick in.

Steve is a very talented handyman.  He gutted and remodeled his whole house. He likes to work with his hands. He is a maintenance repair man for an apartment complex but it will be many months before he mat be able to go back to work.
