Hi, my name is Karen,
On June 26, 2022, my brother fell in his bathroom injuring his neck, causing two disks to slide down and injure his spine. Once he hit the floor, he felt nothing from the neck down. He was rushed by ambulance to Kearney, NE, where doctors performed emergency surgery that night.
Before his injury, he was a local business leader in McCook, NE. He thrived in community service; he was President of the Rotary Club twice. He loves the Nebraska Cornhuskers; He raised six children, and his youngest started her First year at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
After recovering from surgery, he was transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation in Lincoln, where he worked daily with physical and occupational therapists for several hours a day. He required skilled nursing 24 hours a day. He had no feeling whatsoever below his neck. After several weeks of therapy, his doctors diagnosed him as a quadriplegi. After being released from Madonna, he returned to McCook, where he is now living with his dog Bubba. He requires around-the-clock care. Caregivers come into his home to help him with his everyday needs. Shortly after returning home from Madonna, insurance did not pay for home healthcare. So far his insurance has denied his electronic wheelchair. The chair has a joystick to navigate where he goes.
This might seem like TMI, but it is necessary to get the full scope of what his world is going to be for the rest of his life. At this time, his bladder and bowels can not be controlled. He has a sweet loving Boston Terrier that remains by his side. My brother has to call a neighbor to come over and let him outside. Steven has to be moved from his bed to his wheelchair by two people utilizing a body lift. This summer he has been blessed with three new baby girls. He cannot hold them. We all have lives our own and cannot be there all the time. His wonderful wife Melissa died of cancer two years ago. His home used to be filled with family. Now we walk in the door to see him alone, flat on his back in a hospital bed. His two sons are far away in the military serving our country. His daughters are busy with all those new baby girls. If you have continued to read this far, you have a pretty good idea the financial situation is dire. My brother’s life has been turned upside down. We truly have hope and prayers do work. I know most of us have felt the effects of a shrinking economy. Some of us are wondering where the money will come from in our futures. If you can find it in your heart to help my brother and his family financially. May our Heavenly Father bless you and your loved ones. Please offer prayers as well. We all thank you.
