Steve's Non-Profit Dream
Donation protected
I have come to realize that my God given talent is to organize efforts and provide help to those that can't help themselves with their home repairs.
My name is Steve Godby and my dream is to start-up and run a Christian based, non-profit organization that is dedicated to help the disadvantaged and elderly people, in Brazos County, with their much needed home repairs.
I realized this was my calling after I attended a youth mission trip in the summer of 1996. Not only did I realize this is something where I can use my construction skills to help others ... I witnessed a relationship, that I've never known, between the youth and Jesus Christ. Since then, my life has never same.
After retiring and relocating to Bryan-College Station, Texas ... and after years of volunteering with other non-profits and churches on related mission projects involving home repairs ... I feel it is time for me to do what I can to start this "mission".
I am exploring creating a "Rebuilding Together" affiliate for the Brazos County. This organization is part of a nationwide effort to help with minor and major home repairs of those that cannot help themselves. Minor repairs (i.e. painting, wheelchair ramps, safety rails, steps, etc.) can be completed with volunteer work groups. The large repairs (i.e. new roof, new heating / air conditioning, major plumbing, major electrical, etc.) will need to be completed by qualified contractors. The funds for these repairs come from donations of local businesses and from you.
$10,000 is a target that I've set to provide initial funding to; establish the non-profit Rebuilding Together affiliate; establish a 501 c 3 organization; provide seed money for 4 home repair projects in 2016; and explore storage / warehouse space for donated materials. While all administrative and leadership labor is volunteer, ultimately, it is suggested by other affiliates that a fulltime construction superintendent and clerical / admin will be needed. That will come later.
I do intend to serve as a volunteer organizer until this Rebuilding Together affiliate is fully operating, a board of directors are in place and the organization is sustainable.
There is also plenty of networking efforts to come with businesses, the community and government agencies to make this happen.
I truly believe God has given me the skills, the experiences, the desire and the passion to take on this "mission." In addition to that I have a wife, family and friends that are very supportive of this mission ... and for that, I am most appreciative.
Won't you join me on this dream to help others ...
In His Service,
Steve Godby

September Update
While still holding my personal plans loosely, it is very clear through many visits and interviews with local city & county officials, charity organizations and other civic groups that a program to help those that can’t help themselves with their home repairs is “critically needed”. As a matter of fact, a common question is “when can you start?”
The Rebuilding Together model is a model that everyone likes … it is a model where dollars are raised and repairs are made, free of charge, by volunteers and skilled contractors.
Talks with Rebuilding Together, Inc. about forming an “affiliate” called Rebuilding Together Bryan/College Station were very encouraging and supportive. My homework, from Rebuilding Together, Inc., was to go into the community to determine the need for such an organization in the Bryan/College Station area and establish a group of folks into a “steering committee”.
As for financial needs from start and through to the first project, Rebuilding Together Inc. suggest approximately $15,000 to cover; filing process – charter, tax exemption, legal ($2000), launch event ($500), demonstration project – materials, t-shirts, food ($7000), marketing materials ($3000) and affiliation – dues & insurance ($2500).
I’ll continue to keep you updated on how this is all going … and would certainly appreciate your prayers for making this all happen. I continue to rely on His strength and confidence that I can do this …
In His Service,
Steve
