Stop Asian Hate: Documenting Anti-Asian Violence

Anti-Asian racism has a long history in Canada. COVID-19 has fueled racist rhetoric, resulting in another year of escalated violence against the Asian diaspora in Canada. In 2021 alone, there were 943 reports of racist attacks across Canada, representing a 47% increase in reports compared to 2020. This knowledge is made possible in part from funds raised last year through the 2021 Support Asian Canadians Fund.

 

The Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter (CCNCTO) hosts Fight COVID Racism. Project 1907’s reporting centre is in collaboration with Elimin8hate. Data from both tools have been brought together in a joint effort to analyze and better understand the national landscape of anti-Asian racism.

Another year of racist attacks: surge in anti-Asian violence in Canada

 

According to data collected in 2021 and analyzed by the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter and Project 1907, reports were submitted in every province and territory. Attacks are still happening mostly in public spaces, such as parks, streets, and sidewalks.

About This Fund

All donations will be received and administered by the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter.

Funds will be used specifically to support the joint effort of the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter and Project 1907’s data collection initiatives, including bringing their respective platforms together into one centralized reporting centre for anti-Asian racism experienced by the Asian diaspora in Canada. Moving data collection to one centralized system allows for improved data integrity, reduced data redundancy, a more accessible user experience and savings in time and cost.

Funds will be used to complete a rigorous review of the research questions and methodology, expand language access and build a secure new tool that allows our communities to maintain self-determined uses of the data collected. In 2021, 100% of the funding for the analysis and writing of the 2021 national report was crowdsourced and community-generated through GoFundMe’s centralized Support Asian Canadians Fund. What is the Stop Asian Hate movement?

 

During the pandemic, there has been an alarming surge of racist attacks against Asian and Asian Canadian communities. The global #StopAsianHate movement calls for an end to discrimination and violence.

Fight COVID Racism and Elimin8hate reporting tools have collectively received 943 reports of racist attacks across Canada in 2021, representing a 47% increase in reports compared to 2020. Members of the Asian community in Canada are still enduring physical and verbal attacks in public spaces, such as parks, streets, and sidewalks.

Reports of anti-Asian violence only continue to increase. Together, we can fight racism in Canada.

Why now?

 

COVID-19 related racism against Asians and Asian Canadians is on the rise. Instead of being recognized as contributing significantly to the fight against COVID-19, Asian communities in Canada have been met with racism, violence and attacks.

One account from an incident report read, “Two males in their late 20s / early 30s attacked me from behind during my morning walk. They kicked me repeatedly for a couple of minutes, while shouting at me to go back to China with the COVID-19 virus that I brought.”

Canada continues to have a higher number of anti-Asian racism reports per capita than the United States. The incidences reported per capita in Canada are double those reported in the United States. COVID-19 has only revealed the long-standing history of targeted racism against Asian Canadians.

The severity and pervasiveness of anti-Asian racism reported requires immediate action and calls for lasting social change.

About Project 1907

 

Project 1907 is a grassroots group made up of Asian women. We provide spaces for diasporic Asians to understand our histories, explore our identities, examine our privileges and reclaim our power. We aim to elevate Asian voices that are underrepresented and undervalued in mainstream political, social and cultural discourse.

 

About Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter

 

CCNCTO is an organization of Chinese Canadians in the City of Toronto that promotes equity, social justice, inclusive civic participation, and respect for diversity for the past 42 years. We advocate with and for the rights of frontline essential workers, like grocery store workers, personal support workers, and restaurant workers. Other work include fostering youth social justice leadership, awareness raising and public education on the marginalizations faced by racialized and immigrant communities in Toronto.
