Stop Geese Killing in Foster City
Donation protected
Update: Thanks to all the donors who have contributed thus far to the legal fund. We raised enough funds initially to retain the lawyers at Greenfire Law to fight the Foster City Council. With the initial retainer, our lawyers reviewed and determined that Foster City's plan to kill the geese failed to meet the standards as required in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Our lawyers have sent Foster City an extensive demand letter, and we are waiting for a response from the city. However, we need to raise more money to continue this fight of holding the FC Council accountable. Taking them to court will be costly so it is absolutely necessary that we have enough funds to ensure that we will win. Please consider donating again and forwarding our plea to as many of your friends and family as possible.
Hi, my name is Ann, and I’m fundraising to hire a dedicated legal team to stop the immoral and illegal decision to kill at least 100 Canada geese in Foster City. I have circulated an online petition on Change.org that has garnered over 2000 signatures to stop the Foster City Council from ordering the killing of these innocent birds. Unfortunately, despite citizen protests at the Council meetings, despite lying to the public that bacteria contamination of the water is caused by geese feces when in fact it’s caused by the 38 sewage spills, and despite lying to the US Department of Fish and Wildlife that all non-lethal means have been tried, the Foster City Council has asked its Department of Parks and Recreation to apply for permits to kill geese which they have received. Water test reports issued by the Environmental and Public Health Engineering that Foster City commissioned clearly identified that geese are not the cause for the health hazards; rather human waste is the cause for the high bacteria content. Not only are the geese being unfairly blamed for problems they did not cause, killing 100 geese will not change anything when there are 1000 geese in the county of San Mateo. The 900 surviving geese from surrounding areas like Redwood Shores would simply fill in the void left by the 100 slaughtered geese, making the slaughter a completely useless exercise. And at the cost of $85,000 per slaughter, it amounts to costing taxpayers roughly 1000 per goose per year to have them killed. Who wants their taxpayer dollars wasted this way?? We need your help to hire a competent legal team to save the geese. The geese serve an important and irreplaceable role in the complex ecosystem. Furthermore, there are plenty of non-lethal methods to reduce the geese population that have not been tried yet such as re-landscaping the parks with higher grass. Thank you for giving the geese a fighting chance to live.
