The Chinatown Mega Jail is currently still moving forward

We DELAYED the demolition and construction of the Mega Jail with our lawsuit, but the City is moving forward and can start the project any day now.

The demolition process is imminent, sending Chinatown into  5-7 years of traffic, pollution, noise and chaos at a time when we need to recover and rebuild after the last 2 years of the pandemic and xenophobia.  This Mega Jail construction will envelop and destroy Chinatown with its negative environmental, health, financial and community impact.

We need your financial support to continue our fight.

We owe it to our communities - to preserve our history, to enable us to thrive in the present, and ensure a path of success for our future.

Your donation will go towards expanding our reach on this issue, and for ancillary costs associated with the next legal stage into the Federal courts.

Legal background:

The recent historic ruling by Judge John J. Kelley in stopping the demolition and construction of the new borough-based mega jail in Chinatown was a temporary victory for our communities.

Judge Kelley confirmed the fact that City’s actions were illegal as it pushed this new mega jail project through, sacrificing the safety, health and well-being of the communities surrounding the new jail site. This includes the adjacent senior center of 100 seniors between the ages of 80 to 100 years old, a daycare center, community health center, doctor's offices, businesses, and residents in nearby tenement buildings.

Judge Kelley's decision delayed the demolition of the current jail and the start of construction of the new mega jail.

Because the City appealed Judge Kelley's decision, and then our Leave for Appeal with the Court of Appeals was denied, Judge Kelley's decision has been overturned.

Therefore, the City is moving forward with the demolition and construction of the Chinatown mega jail as per their schedule.

5 Facts You Should Know:

The jail will be as tall as The Statue of Liberty standing 300 ft. at 124-125 White Street. It is Experimental, Untested and UnSafe.
Environmental Death Sentence.  Demolition and construction - 10+ years of particle matter, noise pollution, asbestos in our neighborhoods.  Thousands of vulnerable residents, including seniors and children.   Our air quality is already compromised from the effects of 9/11.

More than Our Fair Share.   Chinatown, Tribeca and Little Italy now houses the largest incarceration infrastructure in the entire City .  The current Manhattan Detention Complex and the Tombs has a capacity of 1000 beds.   The new mega-jail, as of March 2022 is projected to hold 886 beds, much LESS than the original two jails combined.

NOT Real Criminal Justice Reform.  Building skyscraper jails at the cost of $8-11+ billion does NOT end mass incarceration.

Investing in communities, healthcare, education, food security, and affordable housing does.

PEOPLE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO GO TO JAIL TO GET THE SERVICES THEY NEED.

ILLEGAL Process. Mayor De Blasio, Speaker Johnson rushed this Plan through, using deception, half-truths, and false promises.
Our lawsuit proves this was true.
We are seeking a federal lawsuit against the City of New York for denying us Equal Protection under the United States Constitution.
We are also drastically expanding our reach far beyond New York City to amplify the voices of the Chinatown community.
