Stop Massive Expansion of Martins Creek Quarry
The historic rural village of Paterson, in the NSW Hunter Valley, is fighting to stop the expansion of a local railway ballast quarry into a private “mega quarry”.
If they get approved, they will irreparably damage the local environment and amenity of historic Paterson village and a large number of suburbs along the haulage route to the M1. The area is a haven for koalas, echidnas, wallabies, flying foxes and birdlife.
People and businesses from Martins Creek, Paterson, Tocal, Mindaribba, Bolwarra Heights, Bolwarra, Pitnacree into East Maitland and beyond will be forced to endure an additional 280 truck movements per day for the next 25 years.
How much bigger is the new proposal?
* 4 x the amount of materials extracted as currently approved
* 5 x the amount of materials that can currently be moved by road
* 3 x the amount of materials that can be moved by rail
* 11 x the number of trucks moving along the haul route
What does this mean for us?
* blasting for the next 25 years causing, noise, cracks and ruining air quality
* silica dust blowing through the historic Paterson valley
* a large truck movement every 90 seconds causing congestion and safety issues
* ruining the heritage value and tourism appeal of the beautiful village of Paterson
* Irreparable loss of flora, fauna and habitat and wildlife corridors
We, the Martins Creek Quarry Action Group, are determined to stop the expansion of the quarry. We will do everything we possibly can to sustain a livable community into the future. We will utilize money raised to pay for printing, expert reports and legal advice.
