Stop the Rt. 53 Tollway

Livable Lake County is a coalition organization including private citizens, the Sierra Club and other coalition members who are concerned about protecting our well-being in Lake County, Illinois, and preserving our valuable land, air and water.

Building the Rt. 53/120 extension would do neither. Instead, it would create financial hardships for residents, increase pollution-related health hazards, and impact more than 31,000 acres—more than in all Lake County Forest Preserves!

We are am not in favor of:
· Raising tolls on I-94
· New tolls on I-94 at 137
· New tolls on I-94 at Deerfield Rd.
· $1500/yr tolls on 53 for a rush hour commute

 Nor do we support:
· Higher tolls on I-294 and other tollways
· Raising my gas taxes
· Siphoning taxes away from our schools & first   responders
· Privatizing $400M worth of state land

Finally, we are concerned that the Illinois Tollway would fall between 1 billion and 1.9 billion short of the project’s $2.6 billion construction cost—even after imposing all these new taxes and tolls!

This project is a financial and environmental boondoggle that Illinois can NOT afford!

• If you agree, then we ask for your contribution to to help us challenge these well-funded, well-connected land owners and elected officials in Illinois.  It's a big task and we are up to it. The Sierra Club and our other coalition partners have a proven record of campagin success in Illinois and Lake County  - but we need funds to successfully wage this campaign!

Our budget includes several items like hiring a full-time organizer, yard signs for supporters along the corridor, house parties, T-shirts for supporters to wear at rallies and meetings, advertising and polling. In order to fight these huge, well-funded land owners and special interests, we need to turn out massive amounts of people and a professional organizer can help us do that.
