My Grandma Is 100 Story Time For Aged Care

My Grandma Is 100 Story Time For Aged Care
Target Budget: $1400

Because of COVID-10, our elderly are isolated in aged care facilities with minimal engagement with the outside world. Not being tech-savvy or able to use social media easily, this must be a lonely and sad time for them. Especially since they cannot interact with young people.

I am the author of children's picture book My Grandma Is 100. I would like to produce a short video of children reading my book to camera -- a bit like what story time is like in the public library for children. This video, along with a hardcopy of the book itself, could then be distributed to aged care facilities for them to watch and read.

My Grandma Is 100 is a hand illustrated picture book about the special relationship between a grandmother and child. It is joyful and celebrates the value the elderly bring to our community. It also universally gets an excited gasp of interest from adults and children of all ages when it is revealed at the end that the grandmother in the story -- who has just turned 100 -- was actually a real person. In others words, the book is not just for children.

Providing the video free to aged care facilities would allow residents to see children, hear them and enjoy the sounds of their voices whilst still maintaining all important social distancing. Afterwards, having the hard cover book on site would allow them to read the book at their own leisure.

The project would also allow at least 13 children the opportunity to take part in a creative project that encourages literacy, elocution, public speaking skills and promotes intergenerational relationships.

What the Funds Will Be Used For
The initial aim with the project is to produce the video reading and to send one copy of the book to 10 aged care facilities around Australia. If successful, there is potential to look at further fundraising to send books to more facilities.

As the author of the book, I am happy to project manage this at not cost. Funds will only be used to cover the cost of a videographer to shoot and edit the readings, the cost of the books and the postage.

Children participating in the project will also be volunteering their time to create the video.

Budget
Videographer (Shooting, Editing, Final Production)    $1000
Books x 10 + Postage                                                                      $400
Total Cost                                                                                               $1400

In the future, once the initial videographer costs are covered, it will only cost $40 per facility to send the video link plus a copy of the book to further aged care facilities so the project can reach more people.
