Storytelling Workshop in Nairobi
Donation protected
Hello everyone! My friend Spring Sutter came up with a wonderful idea to teach a course in storytelling to the young women who are part of Heshima Kenya, an organization serving female refugees ages 13 to 23 from Somalia, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi. Spring will be teaching the writing portion of the workshop, I'll be teaching still photography, and Kenyan filmmaker Zippy Kimundu will work with the students on using these words and images to create multi-media pieces and audio photo essays.
Our workshop will have 15 participants in Nairobi. Class will be all day, every day, from 12/1 - 12/8. This is purely a volunteer effort, and we do have some expenses. If you have a few dollars to spare, perhaps you'd donate to help us with these items:
$800 - A van and driver to pick the girls up at Heshima and transport them to/from our classroom, and for field trips.
$200 - Gas
$200 - Lunch for the students
Any donations beyond the $1200 would go directly to Heshima or other expenses that directly apply to the workshop. We will accept donations up until the last minute (11/30), but it would be great to know what we have to work with by November 15th.
I am so excited to be working with such talented women as Spring and Zippy!
Spring Sutter works in film and television production. She spent six month in Uganda last year working on the Mira Nair film The Queen of Katwe. http://www.queenofkatwe.com
Zippy Kimundu is a flimmaker who has worked on many film projects. You can see her work here: https://vimeo.com/user5960251 Her film Burnt Forest was nominated at the Africa Movie Academy Awards for 'Best Short Film'.
I'm Emily Rieman. I take pictures of domestic animals www.bestfriendphoto.com and teach black and white film and darkroom at Youth in Focus. www.youthinfocus.org
Thank you for donating to this project and we look forward to sharing with you the words and images created by these young women.
