Hector Choc needs ADA home and support
Donation protected
Greetings, I am Carolina Fabian and I'm raising funds for my big brother; Hector. Growing up he was more like my father. He helped raise me, guided, and protected me. Unfortunately, the tables have turned, and it is my turn to help him.
On March 7, Hector suffered an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) that burst in his brain, this caused bleeding in his brain and left him speechless and immobile. Due to the fact he lives alone, it was three days before I found him in that condition. He was transported to Vista hospital and then airlifted to Rush University downtown Chicago, where he remains.
Hector is a fighter, he had a drain placed in his head and endured two surgeries to remove swelling and blood from his brain, clamp the AVF and repair veins as best they could. He was intubated for a week and tube fed for three. While there, he also caught an infection that slowed the healing process. Hector "celebrated" his 48th birthday with fevers and brain swells at Rush. My mother and I have been by his side the entire time. He has had close family also visit and help care for him.
Hector is progressing and is now in rehabilitation however he still lacks function in his entire right side. He cannot speak and can barely communicate by nodding, as it was the left side of his brain that was injured. The bleeding was very extensive and as he did not receive care for three days, it is unknown and not expected that he will make a full recovery, but we would like to get him back to a state of independence as much as possible.
Prior to this, Hector lost his job of nearly 25 years at Abbvie, which means he has no income and no benefits except for insurance, which has now expired. Hector is the type of person to help you out and would not be asking for anything, especially not money. We know it is a big ask, but we also know how loved he is, and this is a desperate situation. This is why we need your help!
As an immediate need, Hector’s home is at risk, we need to secure his home and we will need to make it ADA accessible for his impacted mobility (build a ramp, add support railings, bathroom remodel at minimum). We are exploring additional options for support, but it is difficult under his current circumstances. Hector survived three days after his injury without being able to move, eat, or drink. He continues fighting and pushing through to get better. He is in rehabilitation to build strength on his left side and has been very cooperative with physical, occupational, and speech therapy. We are seeing the progress, although painful and slow. With your assistance, he can only progress more!
More than anything, we have faith.
