In March of 2021, Sarah Everard was abducted while walking home. But the danger posed to women and marginalised groups didn't start or end there.
Women, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and people of colour experience street harassment and threats on a daily basis. From the Police Scotland's 2020 Femicide Census, we know that a woman is killed by a man in the UK every 3 days. From UN Women UK, 97% of women aged 18-24 report that they have been sexually harassed, and 96% of those harassed did not report because of the belief that it wouldn't change anything.
Strut Safe was founded on the belief that, until each and every one of us can walk in our city without fear of violence or harassment, none of us can.
Strut Safe is a free, non-judgemental, volunteer-run service for the Edinburgh community dedicated to helping Edinburgh residents get home safely.
Here's how we work:
On weekend nights, our dedicated phone number is manned by a dispatcher. When you call us for help, the dispatcher will ask for your location and send a pair of volunteers to you to walk with you to your destination or wait for the bus with you.
Our volunteers always work in pairs to ensure maximum safety and accountability.
Why we need your help:
Our service is and will always be free for anyone who needs a walk home. However, with your contribution, we could afford to:
✥ Provide more comprehensive training to our volunteers in crisis management, safeguarding, and protection of vulnerable groups.
✥ Get the word out to local clubs and venues once they re-open.
✥ Expand our aid past the weekend to partner with local community organisations.
✥ Upgrade our phone system to better manage your calls.
✥ Help people from other cities in Scotland open their own branches of Strut Safe.
