Prevent Poaching of Eastern Ontario Turtle Eggs

Donation protected
Who are we?
We are a group of 4th-year biology students at Queen's University raising funds to donate necessary equipment for turtle nest protection this coming hatching season.

Why turtle egg conservation?
In August 2020, over 300 protected turtle eggs were poached from their nesting sites in the Kingston region. This poaching event and others of its kind are capable of decimating populations and destroying entire trophic levels of aquatic ecosystems. We have lost approximately 70% of our turtle populations in Ontario to date (Turtle Guardians 2021). This issue has inspired us to take action.

What are the funds going towards?
Our funds will specifically be used to purchase surveillance equipment necessary for monitoring nesting sites in the Eastern Ontario region.  All equipment purchased with the raised funds will be donated to Turtle Guardians in Haliburton, responsible every summer for saving Eastern Ontario's cottage country turtles and the natural landscapes they occupy. We hope that our fundraiser will aid them in their fight against biodiversity loss.

Turtles are so important to the health of our ecosystems.  We would be so grateful to receive any donations to our fundraiser!

Why is biodiversity so important?
Biodiversity is extremely important for the maintenance of all ecological levels. Biodiversity supports a larger number of plant species and, therefore, a greater variety of crops. It is responsible for the protection of freshwater resources. It promotes soil formation and protection.  It provides nutrient storage and recycling. It is an extremely important factor that contributes to the continuation of a thriving ecosystem and even the disappearance of just one generation can have a significant, negative, lasting impact.
