Study Abroad to Uganda: Public Health

Hi, my name is Jayla Lawson and I am a junior exercise science major at Kennesaw State University. I am trying to go on this trip to broaden my understanding and potentially spark a new career path in public health. Last summer I got an amazing opportunity through AmeriCorps to work with a program called OwlSwap on campus, which opened my eyes to how public health is actually dealt with. OwlSwap addresses issues of environmental and social equity in the fashion industry through action, education, and experiential opportunities in their local, regional, and the international community to bring about a swap to more sustainable lifestyle habits. This trip to Uganda would show me a completely different side to public health through things like vaccinations, food access, and living opportunities, more than things I would be able to see in a classroom or in the United States in general. Currently, I am a bit unsure if I want to pursue a career in physical therapy or merge my knowledge of exercise science with public health. I truly believe this trip will help me make these decisions and put me on the right path toward success.
