Success Factors: A board game about economics

Donation protected

Success Factors is a two to six player game about investing in your community. You earn money represented by the poker chips you collect as your token travels through the board, with the overall goal being to have the most philanthropic investments and wealth at the end of the game.

Raising kids is hard work. I have three teenage boys and there are lots of life-lessons that we talk about: getting an education, exploring different careers, using good money management skills, and making healthy life-decisions. We also all know that things will happen along the way - both challenges and opportunities.

I've worked on a broad range of issues including education, housing, and workforce development both professionally and as a community volunteer. I wanted to give the boys some practice runs in a short-game so they could grasp a few key concepts that are important for them to understand. A few years ago I created a goal setting journal, called MyPlan Workbooks that I sold to both youth and adult programs, but I wanted to try and Gamify the lessons and I've heard that other groups would be interested in having this type of activity for their youth program.

The boys (and there friends) are super competitive. They play football, basketball, baseball and generally will compete with each other about anything. So I created the rules of this game in a friendly competition. Not necessarily who has the most money at the end of the game, but the largest philanthropy investments back into their community (i.e. investing in a community center, environmental sustainability, or job training programs, and more).

Inspired by the passing of California rapper, Nipsey Hussel, I centered this game around the idea of economics and investing in small businesses. I've also included side hustles and ensured that the types of businesses touched every major industry.

I've included a good representation of occupations and included  realistic base salaries for players using the Bureau of Labor Statistics entry-level wages. I took that a step further and every occupation has realistic budget based on what they can afford. You also can't accept certain jobs without earning a career token.

In this game, players will draw cards that range from answering simple questions about their goals next year to life situations that impact their finances. This game is both strategic and the luck of the draw.

Essentially this is about practicing life skills. We have had a few times to play the game with their friends and talk about all types of things like what is good credit and their goals for next year. I've added in a number of conversation starters and some questions around dreams, goals, and life-lessons that help people connect.

The money raised will help us finalize all the game pieces, marketing, and distribution of the project to schools and youth serving programs. We have the prototype and have demo and its actually really fun to play with adult friends too.
