Sue is the type of person who would give you the shirt off her back.
Her immense calling as a helper and her love language of gifts is evident to anyone who has ever walked through the doors of Kids on the Hill Academy where Sue is one of the Directors.
Parents have always been able to trust that when they drop off their child at the Academy, that child will be lovingly cared for by the Academy team, and especially, Sue.
However, on January 25, 2017, that ability to care for others was turned on its head. It was a normal day – full of laughing and chatty children Sue started coughing. The coughing episode was so intense, the people who saw it described it almost like a seizure. When Sue came to, she awoke to paper scattered everywhere, Dr Pepper spilled all over the floor, and no recollection of having passed out.
The Staff took Sue to the ER - where she was rushed back into x-rays, IVs, brain scans and body scans. The doctor came back with news of severe pneumonia, but it was his second diagnosis that would change Sue's life forever. After ordering several more tests, the results were back indicating Stage Four Breast Cancer. Sue described this news as like being "given a death sentence".
The light in this dark tunnel is that Sue's cancer is slow-growing and nonaggressive.
It can be treated with oral chemotherapy, but not cured (without divine intervention of course). As you can imagine, this diagnosis has not only physical limitations, but financial stressors as well as Sue has been told she cannot return to her beloved Academy.
