Sue Ellen Needs Our Help

Donation protected
Many of you know and love Sue Ellen. She's feisty, passionate, and one of the biggest criminal justice reform advocates out there. She has spent years fighting for what's right, and now you can help me fight to keep her safe and healthy!

On the evening of Tuesday, June 9th, Sue Ellen tripped over some boxes in her living room, hitting her head on the wall and fracturing a rib. By that Friday she was very dizzy and nauseous, so was transported to the hospital where she has been since, with the majority of time spent in ICU.

Because she has Myelodysplastic syndrome, she bleeds easily, so had delayed internal bleeding in her head and chest cavity from her fall.  This also causes her to be immunocompromised.

Finally now, after 10 days of hospitalization, we're seeing big enough improvements to start planning for her release.  When the case manager finally called me yesterday to discuss her release plan, I was informed they were recommending an acute rehab facility. As Sue Ellen's health advocate, I said no way given her compromised state and severity of COVID-19 in these facilities. Thankfully her medical team is on board with me, so we're setting the new game plan for her to keep healing at home, where it's safer for her to be, and with professional assistance.

And this is where all of you come in! Because Sue Ellen lives alone, I want her to have 24/7 professional caregivers for at least 1-2 weeks so she can regain her strength and health safely. Though her insurance covers some things, such as physical therapy, etc., they do not cover this. I have already secured this team of 2 amazing caregivers for as soon as she's released thanks to a doctor friend's referral. They each work a 12 hour shift, one during the day, and one at night. She may be going home with oxygen, and will also have to do her breathing treatments/exercises 10x per hour while she's awake, so they will push her to stay on track. They will help her with meals, light housekeeping, laundry, showering, and making sure she is safe at all times.

Because Sue Ellen can't obviously work right now, and Reinventing Reentry has not been able to do any Reentry Simulations because of COVID-19, I want to make sure the caregivers are covered and she has a buffer for rent, food, utilities, and other living expenses while she heals.

This is a woman who has given so much of herself to help others, so please contribute whatever you can to help - whether it's $5 or $500 -- it all helps.

Thank you in advance.
