Potentially life changing operation for Sue Perry
Reconstructing an Angels Wings
Written by: Sherry Perry (Susan's Mother) and Michele Perry-Grande (Susan's Sister)
Right now Susan is at risk for losing her entire left leg without these operations. She was born with congenital hip dysplasia and has already had 28 surgeries on her left hip since birth. She has been a Registered Nurse and Nursing Instructor for over the past 13 years and worked with one crutch during that time. Her hopes are to go back into teaching and nursing, providing care and helping the nursing community.
All the surgeries that Susan had were hip reconstructions, hip replacement, and a hip revision. In May 2013 her hip dislocated and she developed very serious infections that required surgeries resulting in the removal of her hip, part of the pelvis and most of her femur bone. The infection didn’t clear up until January 2015. She has been in a wheelchair, semi body brace, and hospital bed with homecare for the past two and a half years.
We have searched all over the east coast for a Orthopedic doctor that would take on this very difficult case and give her a chance to walk again.
She was finally accepted at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in NYC in June of 2015. She was seen by two of the top orthopedic surgeons in their field. These doctors have designed a custom made hip replacement which has taken 6 months to create. Susan will also undergo vascular, pelvis and femur reconstruction including lengthening her leg 4 inches. She will have 3 surgeries over the next few months; then will be transferred to New Jersey for months of rehabilitation. The orthopedic surgeon for the third reconstruction surgery does not take her health insurance, charging at least $45,000. Over the last two and a half years she has exhausted all of her resources. Funds raised will also help with expenses. Thank you all so much.
From Isabell Sanita:
In 2002 with the aid of a crutch a teacher began the task of giving her undivided attention to build an army of helping hands for the local hospitals. She spent countless hours traveling between the colleges that she taught nursing students and the hospitals where she was in charge of their clinicals. When school was on break she worked two other jobs.
This single mother of two tirelessly gave of herself to so many people. I am one of those people. She was by my side every night after she left work, with a helping hand during her grandmother’s final days. I was glad she was there. I never thought how she was feeling during those days. Most people never did because she always used a crutch to walk.
Born with congenital hip dysplasia at the current age of 44, Sue has surpassed most peoples’ idea of what a productive life should look like.
At present time, Sue is at risk for losing her leg. With a history of 28 surgeries on her left hip since birth her choices are limited. Currently a cable holds her leg in place. After countless research, orthopedic doctors have been located willing to take her case.
Insurance coverage for the surgery is not an option for reconstruction. Time is limited to reconstruct this Angels Wings.
Sincerely,
Isabella Sanita
